USS Cal Builders Completes Phase One of Bishop Elementary Improvements

Measure G-Supported Project Utilizes Fast, Affordable Solution to Deliver High-Quality Learning Environments

SUNNYVALE, Calif., May 08, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- USS Cal Builders, a dynamic contracting firm specializing in educational facilities, announces the first phase completion of Bishop Elementary School’s modernization project. Recently, students and staff relocated from the old classroom facilities on the campus’ south side to a brand-new, two-story classroom building on the north end. Sunnyvale School District officials, teachers, community members and employees of USS Cal Builders, American Modular Systems and Aedis Architects were on hand to celebrate the milestone.

“After much planning and community input, we’re ecstatic for a new Bishop Elementary School to come to life,” said Rob Smiley, Chief Operations Officer at Sunnyvale School District. “We’re thrilled with the collaboration USS Cal Builders has demonstrated with our design and construction partners on this project. The team effort has been critical to keep the project moving forward, and I have no doubt the final product will be remarkable.”

To maintain minimal impact on the students and staff during the regular school year, the project utilized Gen7, a modular, cost-effective and sustainable solution that allows for classrooms to be built offsite to 90% completion and later installed on campus. Gen7 grants classrooms the ability to open to occupants in just 90 days. In addition to decreasing construction disruptions on campus, Gen7 decreases the overall cost of the project by minimizing associated in-field work. The time and cost savings has allowed the Sunnyvale School District to perform the campus-wide modernization in two phases and keep the campus open and functional while undergoing construction.

“It has been a very rewarding experience working with Sunnyvale School District on this new, state-of-the-art facility that will foster 21st century learning for our future leaders,” said USS Cal Builders’ Northern California Regional Director Rudy Sultan. “Communication from all parties has allowed us to streamline efforts to produce a modernized building that demonstrates the District’s commitment to excellence in education. Bishop Elementary School will serve its students and faculty in today’s educational environment and beyond, and the larger community will benefit for years to come.”

Funding for the improvements and renovations comes from Measure G, a $96 million school bond measure approved by school district voters in 2013. The new classroom buildings are part of one of the largest capital facility projects ever undertaken by the District and will be its first two-story campus structure. USS Cal Builders, under the direction of Project Manager Kirk Beckstead, will see through phase two of the project, which will incorporate a new, separate building on campus that will house an early child development center, a renovated administration and theatre building as well as a multi-purpose space.
