Statistics Reveal the Growing Use of prescription drugs in America for Non-Medical Reasons

SAN DIEGO, May 09, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Abuse and misuse of prescription drugs is a severe and growing problem in the U.S. According to the National Study on Drug Use and Health report in 2016, an estimated 28.6 million people in America age twelve and over use illicit drugs during the month before the study. This means about one in ten people struggle with some level of substance use, which includes addiction to prescription drugs.

Prescription drug misuse refers to taking medication or dose other than prescribed, which can have serious health and medical consequences. When an individual takes a prescription drug for a recreational or non-medical reason, it can easily and quickly result in addiction that requires treatment. The increase in the prescription drug misuse is reflected in increased overdose deaths linked to prescription drugs, emergency room visits, and treatment admissions for the prescription drug use disorder or addiction.

In the United States, an estimated fifty-four million people over the age of twelve have taken prescription drugs for nonmedical purposes in their lifetime. Majority of the abused prescription drugs include sedatives, stimulants, tranquilizers, and painkillers. This was according to the reported number of individuals who misuse the drug.

In 2016, over forty-six people died every day from overdoses, which involve prescription opioids. Overdose rates of prescription opioid are also the highest among people ages twenty-five to fifty-four years. Many statistics show that the use of prescription drugs for non-medical reasons continues to grow in the US and the effects are very evident.

However, it is important to note that help is always available for those who are suffering from prescription drug abuse or addiction. Various government and non-profit organizations are providing services to reach to those who are struggling with addiction and others who need professional help to solve this concern.
