Pickering, May 17, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Organization of Canadian Nuclear Industries (OCNI) is pleased to announce the creation of the Martyn Wash Memorial Scholarships for 2nd, 3rd and 4th year nuclear engineering students at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT). The Scholarships will be awarded annually beginning in the 2018/19 academic year to two students in the Faculty of Energy Systems and Nuclear Science (FESNS) based on their academic performance.
The Scholarships will honour the memory of Martyn Wash who was the first president of the Organization of CANDU Industries (now OCNI) and who passed away suddenly on April 15 at the age of 62 in Cobourg Ontario.
Martyn Wash dedicated most of his 34-year professional career to championing Canadian nuclear energy capabilities. Following his graduation from Dalhousie with a degree in mechanical engineering and from Trent University with a degree in economics, he began his career working in power generation at Nova Scotia Power. After a two-year assignment at the Chalk River Laboratories doing post-irradiation fuel characterization, he joined Canadian Westinghouse in Port Hope as resident fuel specialist for the production of CANDU, PWR and BWR fuel assemblies. His work earned him the George Westinghouse Award. He continued in this role with Zircatec (now Cameco) rising to Vice President, Sales and Marketing, managing nuclear related projects in Argentina, Romania, China and Korea.
Martyn was President of the Organization of CANDU Industries from 2001-2008 growing it from 38 companies to a significant industry voice of 115 companies. Later, he joined Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. to be the Project Lead for advanced fuel cycles using recycled Uranium and Thorium. Late in his career he consulted for Bruce Power, Westinghouse, Cameco, Fluor, Fallon Ultrasonics, Laker Energy, Nukem, EnerMotion, Amidyne, and NRCan. He never ceased being a passionate advocate for nuclear power and for the Canadian nuclear industry.
