KT and Qwilt to Evaluate 5G RAN-based Open Caching for Mobile Content Delivery

Collaboration Scope Includes Proof of Concept and Market Trial of Mobile Content Delivery Using Open Caching Running on KT’s 5G Edge Platform

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Aug. 30, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- KT Corp. (KRX: 030200; NYSE: KT), South Korea’s largest telecommunications company, announced today the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with Qwilt to evaluate how open caching can enable efficient mobile content delivery on KT’s 5G network. The parties will focus their cooperation on a proof of concept (PoC) and, later, a limited market trial of Qwilt’s open caching solution integrated with KT’s 5G Edge Platform.

5G’s hyper-connectivity and ultra-low latency will enable new use cases in Korea. For example, 4K UHD video footage filmed by airborne drones and robots, and transmitted through a 5G network, can enable a faster and more accurate analysis of disaster scenes by emergency response personnel. 5G can also improve remote control and command of disaster response teams in the field. KT was the first telecom provider to introduce 5G broad-scale trial services in 2018.

“Over the past years, KT has pioneered technological innovations in South Korea,” said Lee YongGyoo, Head of KT’s 5G Business Unit. “We will continue our efforts as the ‘People’s Company’ to make the country more productive with our advanced technological prowess, resources and know-how.”

“Qwilt’s Open Edge Cloud, a software-based edge computing solution, fits well into KT’s strategy to continue to invest in pioneering technology for its mobile network,” said Alon Maor, CEO and co-founder of Qwilt. “Our collaboration with open caching running on KT’s 5G Edge platform will demonstrate how we can bring the best content delivery performance to 5G wireless networks. We’re pleased to establish this partnership with KT and, working collaboratively together, bring compelling use cases to their 5G network.”

Qwilt’s open cache solution is based on Streaming Video Alliance approved specifications which were developed to allow all Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) to leverage open cache infrastructure deployed deep in ISP networks to lower latency, improve quality and enable new applications. Qwilt’s open caching is engineered specifically for high performance and scalable content delivery in the demanding environment of high-capacity operator networks. Qwilt’s solution is delivered as a fully managed service to speed deployment and streamline ongoing operation. The broader operator organization—including network planning, engineering and operations teams—benefit from comprehensive analytics, which offer insights into growth trends and network performance. By relying on open caching for content delivery at the network edge, operators can substantially improve network efficiency.
