Chicago, Sept. 27, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Hillard Heintze announced today that the firm and its Threat + Violence Risk Management practice leader Senior Vice President Matthew Doherty received the 2018 U.S. Outstanding Security Performance Award (US OSPA) for “Outstanding Security Training Initiative.” The award was one of several presented at the Global Security Exchange in Las Vegas yesterday.
Now in its third year, the US OSPAs are part of a global awards organization dedicated to recognizing and rewarding companies, teams and individuals who have performed at an exceptional level within the security sector. The OSPAs are designed to be both independent and inclusive.
A Special Focus on Preventing Targeted Violence
“Accepting this award is a special honor for us,” says Hillard Heintze CEO and founder Arnette Heintze, “because this represents a validation of lifelong careers many of us in the firm have around preventing acts of targeted violence. As Americans, we have earned the right assurance that our workplaces are safe and secure.
And as a nation, we know how to prevent the terrible acts of violence that we are encountering now almost every week.”
As a nominee in this award category, Hillard Heintze was required to provide evidence of outstanding performance with respect to (1) the aims of the initiative and how these are focused on the client; (2) how innovation is displayed; (3) the factors that enable the trainers to excel; (4) examples of improved performance; and (5) demonstration of business benefits and how they are sustained.
Training Corporate Threat Assessment Teams
Hillard Heintze has been very successful in training threat assessment teams across the country for entities such as the Social Security Administration, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab, the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS), and many Fortune-ranked enterprises. The training (1) outlines the best practices for an effective threat assessment program and team, (2) explores the latest research in violence prevention, (3) provides guidance on conducting threat assessments and interviews, (4) illustrates the importance of information sharing among threat assessment team members, and (5) explains the limits of information sharing and confidentiality.
Hillard Heintze’s additional work with workplace and school violence prevention training program addresses questions such as who will carry out responsibilities on the threat assessment team; what are the warning signs and how should they be reported; what kind of staffing is needed; how will the knowledge and expertise developed by the team be maintained and shared; and what balance of specialized threat assessment and general investigative experience is most appropriate and effective.
Matthew Doherty agrees. “I’ve given essentially my entire career to this issue, at one level or another,” he says. “And every single time I learn of another active assailant or shooter incident – whether through our work or in the news – I am re-inspired to share what we know about prevention with as many other people as possible so that the next tragedy is averted. We don’t count the incidents that happen. We count the ones that don’t.”
High-Impact Training Outcomes via Interactive Behavioral Simulations
During the training sessions, trainees participate in interactive behavioral simulations™ created to reflect potential real-world threatening events. Interactive behavioral simulations™ are a unique and trademarked technique pioneered by David Swinkand and Barry Spodak, and used to train thousands of federal law enforcement employees at agencies such as the U.S. Secret Service, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Marshals Service and the U.S. Capitol Police. This fascinating, unique and highly effective methodology draws on the developmental learning theories of psychodrama, which explain that people learn new skills most effectively in environments that allow them to integrate the physical, cognitive, psychological and emotional challenges of human interaction.
