The Eye Institute of Utah Among First in U.S. to Offer Visian Toric ICL

Salt Lake City, UT, Oct. 24, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Eye Institute of Utah, a comprehensive eye care practice and leading surgical eye center in the Intermountain West, announces plans to offer Visian Toric ICL for the correction of myopia with astigmatism. Dr. Robert J. Cionni and Dr. Zachary J. Zavodni of The Eye Institute of Utah will be among the first 50 surgeons in the United States to perform the newly approved procedure.

STAAR Surgical Company announced in September, 2018 that the Visian® Toric ICL had been granted U.S. approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The Eye Institute of Utah has been committed to advanced eyecare and technological innovation for over 35 years, and looks forward to broadening their wide range of vision correction options to include this new option in the Implantable Collamer® Lens (ICL) product line. Patients who are not candidates for laser vision correction, including LASIK, due to factors such as thin corneas or severe myopia may be candidates for ICL. However, since the non-toric ICL was previously not approved to correct astigmatism, patients with astigmatism and severe myopia were extremely limited in vision correction options.

“Our patients have been waiting a long time for access to this exciting technology.  Vision correction for patients needing Toric ICL is literally life changing and we’re so proud to be able to deliver this new solution,” Dr. Zavodni stated.

The Visian Toric ICL represents a vast expansion in the number of people who may qualify for vision correction surgery, as this new technology will be available to nearsighted patients with astigmatism, including some patients who may be excluded from other types of vision correction procedures. Approximately 30 percent of the population is affected by astigmatism.1

About The Visian Toric ICL
The Visian Toric ICL is a micro-thin, Implantable Collamer® Lens that is placed in the eye behind the iris and in front of the natural lens. Unlike laser vision correction procedures, the cornea is not reshaped and the ICL procedure can be reversed if needed. Vision correction is achieved similar to a contact lens, but the patient will not feel or see the ICL once implanted. While the Visian Toric ICL is newly approved for astigmatism treatment in the U.S. market, the Visian ICL procedure to correct myopia has been popular in the United States since 2005, and more than 900,000 procedures have been performed. Visian ICL reports a 99% patient satisfaction rate.2 The vision correction specialists at The Eye Institute of Utah look forward to offering a proven treatment option to meet an expanded range of vision needs.
