She joins from Indiana University Health, where she served as senior vice president and general counsel. Claus will succeed Maxine Frank, Esq., who is transitioning from her position as executive vice president, chief legal officer and general counsel of NewYork-Presbyterian, to a new role as a senior advisor.

“We are delighted to welcome Mary Beth Claus to NewYork-Presbyterian,” said Dr. Steven J. Corwin, president and CEO of NewYork-Presbyterian. “Mary Beth is a skilled lawyer and experienced leader who shares our commitment to providing the highest quality, most compassionate care to every patient. We look forward to her joining our leadership team and strengthening NewYork-Presbyterian’s position as a national leader in patient care, research and education. We are deeply grateful to Maxine for her extraordinary service to NewYork-Presbyterian over the last 19 years, and for her continued guidance and thoughtful leadership.”

Prior to her role at Indiana University Health, Claus served as deputy chief legal officer for Cleveland Clinic and gained more than 20 years of private law firm experience as a partner in the health care sections of two large firms.

In her new position at NewYork-Presbyterian, Claus will be responsible for developing the legal and corporate strategies for the enterprise, and managing corporate, tax, real estate, labor and employment, corporate governance, anti-trust and risk management issues. She will supervise internal audit and compliance, and serve as the chief legal advisor to NewYork-Presbyterian’s senior leadership and the Board of Trustees.

“I am excited to join NewYork-Presbyterian, one of the nation’s leading and most comprehensive academic health care delivery systems,” said Claus. “I admire NewYork-Presbyterian’s mission of providing high-quality, compassionate care to every patient. NewYork-Presbyterian’s excellence in clinical care, research and education, in collaboration with Weill Cornell Medicine and Columbia University Irving Medical Center, is unparalleled, and I’m thrilled to become a part of this dynamic team and help prepare the institution for the future.”

Claus has more than 30 years of legal health care experience. At Indiana University Health, she directed statewide departments for legal, privacy, regulatory, internal audit, corporate compliance, risk management and insurance operations. Prior to that role, she was deputy chief legal officer and director of health care regulatory matters for the Cleveland Clinic, where she oversaw the medical center’s regulatory and legal compliance matters. Before joining Cleveland Clinic, Claus worked for nearly a decade as a partner at Faegre Baker Daniels, a large law firm, where she managed legal representations for a wide variety of health and life science clients and advised on regulatory and compliance strategies during the development of new hospital integrations, joint venture initiatives and specialty clinics. Her career also includes several years spent managing the health care practice group as a partner at Bingham, Summers, Welsh and Spilman, and two years working as health and human services executive liaison for former Indiana Governor Evan Bayh, advising him during the Medicaid budget overhaul of 1992.

Claus has been named among the top lawyers in the country in The Best Lawyers in America and Indiana Super Lawyers (a rating service of lawyers based on peer recognition and professional achievement) including the distinction of being one of Indiana’s top 25 female lawyers. In 2014, she was named one of the Indiana Business Journal’s “Women of Influence.”  She is also active in her community, serving on the Board of Directors for WFYI, the largest public radio and TV station in Indiana, and the Board of the Indiana Repertory Theatre. She spent several years working on the Greater Indianapolis Progress Committee, the Board of Directors for MDwise, Inc., the Wishard Memorial Foundation and Safe Sitter, Inc., as well as serving as a chairperson for the Indiana Children’s Trust Fund.
