TORONTO, Feb. 21, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- INFINITI’s variable compression ratio engine (VC-Turbo engine) has won the 2019 Innovation Award for Best Green Innovation, from the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). AJAC announced the award yesterday at the Canadian International Auto Show (CIAS).
“We are honoured to receive this award from some of Canada’s top automotive journalists, all of whom have been on this judging panel for several years, with particular expertise in evaluating the best new automotive technology for the Canadian customer,” says Adam Paterson, managing director, INFINITI Canada. “We are proud to offer our customers the VC-Turbo engine, which is another world’s first technology from INFINITI. This accolade from AJAC recognizes all of the VC-Turbo benefits and its overall significance - not only for our brand and our customers, but for the industry.”
The AJAC Best New Innovation Awards evaluate a technology feature’s impact on the marketplace; adaptability potential for other vehicles; benefits to the consumer, and overall consumer appeal.
“AJAC recognizes the significance of INFINITI’s new VC-Turbo engine by presenting it with this year’s Innovation Award for the best new Green technology. Just like computerized engine controls in the ‘80’s, variable camshaft timing in the ‘90’s and direct fuel injection in the past decade, the variable compression engine design revolutionizes the operation of gasoline engines and brings to the consumer the advantages of fuel economy, superior performance and low emissions,” says Jim Kerr, chair of the AJAC Innovation Awards. This VC (variable compression) design has the potential to influence how other manufacturers build gasoline engines in the future.”
The INFINITI VC-Turbo is the world’s first production-ready variable compression ratio engine and has been in development for more than 20 years. It debuted on the all-new 2019 QX50 luxury crossover, which launched in Canada last spring.
A breakthrough in combustion engine design, the 2.0-litre VC-Turbo engine adjusts its compression ratio to optimize power and efficiency. The VC-Turbo engine changes its compression ratio seamlessly with an advanced multi-link system, continuously raising or lowering the pistons' reach, which provides the power and strength of a sprinter with the efficiency and endurance of a marathon runner. The 2019 QX50 delivers best-in-class fuel economy of 10.0L/100 km (city) 7.8 L/100 km (highway); 9.0 L/100km (combined) 1.
In operation, the QX50's VC-Turbo engine offers any compression ratio between 8:1 (for high performance) and 14:1 (for high efficiency). The engine delivers 268 hp at 5,600 rpm and 280 lb ft at 1,600 – 4,800 rpm. The VC-Turbo's specific power output is higher than many competing turbocharged gasoline engines, and it comes close to the performance of some V6 gasoline engines. The unit's single-scroll turbo ensures immediate accelerator responses on demand.
The VC-Turbo's powerful-yet-compact footprint allows the entire cabin to move forward, revealing more interior space and making the 2019 QX50 one of few vehicles in its segment to offer sliding and reclining rear seating. The QX50 also boasts rear legroom of up to 38.7 inches/983 millimeters and a trunk that can accommodate a stroller situated length-wise without letting down the back seats, with space for additional cargo.
Available at INFINITI retailers nationwide with a starting M.S.R.P.2 of $44,490, the 2019 QX50 is the brand's most advanced vehicle to date and embodies everything INFINITI stands for: Beautiful design, advanced technology and empowering performance features. Additionally, INFINITI's ProPILOT Assist technologies offer support when needed and add to the enjoyment and confidence of the driver.
