The Longevity Revolution: How the Rapidly Expanding Aging Population is Generating Entrepreneurial Opportunities

MIT Enterprise Forum Cambridge and AGENCY to convene top experts to address how technology is improving the nature and circumstances of the aging process

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., March 13, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Startup opportunities abound in the new world of tech assisted aging.

As the average life expectancy rises, a massive shift in the demographics of aging is having profound effects throughout the economy. The 50+ year-old population today controls almost 80% of US aggregate net worth. Increasingly tech savvy, this group spends more money online than Gen X and Gen Y consumers combined. As women and men alike redefine expectations for later life, they are leveraging their health and wealth in ways that were unimaginable only a few years ago.

These dynamics are creating unprecedented entrepreneurial opportunities. From new healthcare and social services to novel hardware and software solutions, this shift represents an $8 trillion market in US alone. The desire to age well while living a more connected, healthier and fulfilling life is fueling accelerating demand for tech-enabled innovations.

To dig into these trends,  MIT Enterprise Forum (MITEF) Cambridge is partnering with AGENCY – a co-working space for collective impact where innovators focused on aging and longevity can grow their companies – to present The Longevity Revolution is Here. Set for the Cambridge Innovation Center on Thursday, April 11, moderator Jody Holtzman, a leading tech and aging strategist, thought leader and senior managing partner of Longevity Venture Partners, aims to uncover the opportunities generated by the Longevity Economy during an interactive session with top industry experts including:

With AGENCY Cofounder and Global Launch Director Danielle D. Duplin hosting the evening, the panel will delve into a range of topics affecting the new longevity frontier while exploring how entrepreneurs can meet the demands of an aging population by addressing issues. These include:

  • lifelong engagement and aging in community
  • medical care
  • economic security
  • service-enriched housing
  • mobility
  • assistance with activities of daily living
  • age-friendly products that are designed without stigma
  • radical advances in brain health and chronic disease management

“The longevity economy is fundamentally transforming how we think about aging,” said MITEF Cambridge Executive Director Katja Wald. “By partnering with AGENCY to highlight new products and services that can impact our daily lives, we’ll shine a spotlight on how the innovation community is fueling many of these profoundly important social and business trends – to the benefit of startups and the aging population.”
