Washington, DC, March 25, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- WASHINGTON, DC — RALIANCE, a national partnership committed to ending sexual violence in one generation, announced today the recipients of four new “Raliance Honors” awards that recognize individuals whose hard work and leadership are helping create a world free from sexual harassment, misconduct and abuse once and for all. The honorees will be celebrated next week on April 2 in Washington, DC.
“As we commemorate Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April, RALIANCE is proud to celebrate these individuals who have inspired their communities, organizations and institutions to champion changes that make sexual violence prevention possible,” said Monika Johnson Hostler, RALIANCE Managing Partner and President of the National Alliance to End Sexual Violence. “We all play an important role in raising awareness about sexual harassment, misconduct and abuse and educating our communities on how to prevent all types of sexual violence.”
RALIANCE Person of the Year Award: Dr. Christine Blasey Ford is a passionate and public champion for survivors of sexual assault. Her testimony in the confirmation hearings of Justice Brett Kavanaugh had a global impact on how we respond to and support survivors of sexual assault. Dr. Blasey Ford’s sacrifice in sharing her experience, and the difficulties she subsequently endured, brought much needed attention to the importance of supporting and believing survivors.
RALIANCE Policy Maker Award: Congresswoman Gwen Moore has been a tireless advocate for women’s rights and civil rights issues, including sexual assault, domestic violence and women's health. She is a strong champion for the ongoing attempt to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act as well as its previous authorizations in 2005 and 2013. Rep. Moore has made a meaningful difference in the movement to prevent sexual assault by pushing for federal legislation that protects all survivors.
RALIANCE Corporate Innovator: Tony West, Chief Legal Officer at Uber is a corporate leader and asset in Uber’s transformation on sexual assault response. He was the first to remove the requirement of mandatory arbitration for sexual assault survivors in the rideshare industry. West has also partnered with sexual assault organizations and encouraged the expertise of advocates to better inform Uber’s policy on this issue. He is a role model for how corporate leaders can bring positive change to their industries.
RALIANCE Community Leader Award: Indira Henard, Executive Director of the DC Rape Crisis Center is a community leader who has made significant contributions on a national and local level, particularly during Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearings. Henard provided services and support to an unprecedented influx of survivors in DC and offered her expertise on sexual assault response to policy makers and the media. Her work to increase services for sexual assault survivors in the DC metropolitan area has been invaluable.
