Canadian Hearing Society’s 2019 National Scholarship Program Opens for Applicants

Scholarships break down barriers and create bright futures for Deaf and hard of hearing students

Toronto, ON, April 30, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Canadian Hearing Society (CHS) announced today that it is seeking qualified applicants for its 2019 National Scholarship Program.

Introduced in 2017, the scholarship program reduces financial barriers for Deaf and hard of hearing students applying to or attending post secondary institutions. The number of awards granted will depend on the number and ranking of qualified applicants.

Successful applicants, who are full-time students, will receive a $3,000 scholarship award for the year. Scholarship awards for part-time students are $1,000. New this year, there are two application streams: one for new applicants and one for returning scholarship winners. Returning students may be eligible to receive the award for up to four years.  This change will significantly reduce funding stress for students over the course of their education.

The funds can be used to cover tuition, residence or educational resources. For many recipients, receiving a scholarship is life-changing.

“This award will provide me with so many more opportunities. You have given me the   assistance I need to continue on my path of future success,” says Corinna Den Dekker, a 2018 scholarship winner pursuing Disability Studies and Women’s Studies because she identifies strongly as a Deaf woman who wants to contribute to both communities.

For more information on eligibility criteria and how to apply, go to www.chs.ca/scholarships. The submission deadline for applications is May 20, 2019 at 4 p.m. EST. Submissions will be reviewed by a committee of Deaf and hard of hearing educators, business leaders and CHS staff. All winners will be notified by September 11, 2019 and recognized across the Canadian Hearing Society community later in the month.

The Canadian Hearing Society’s National Scholarship Program is made possible by the generous support of donors and partners who share CHS’ commitment to transforming the lives of Deaf and hard of hearing Canadians.
