WOZ ED and Steven Hunter to Provide STEAM Kits to Lindop 92

Former NBA player continues to make a difference in home-town community by supporting technology-based after-school programs

BROADVIEW, Ill. and SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., May 02, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- WOZ ED, a personalized approach to instill a tech-based mindset in schoolchildren and the leader in demand-driven K-12 Education, and former NBA player and Proviso Township native, Steven Hunter, announced today their continued support for local students by providing STEAM kits to Lindop 92, an elementary school district in Broadview, IL. The STEAM kits provide technology-based education programs at K-12 schools in Chicago’s metropolitan and surrounding areas.

The Steven Hunter Youth Foundation is driving the commitment to provide STEAM kits, an integrated approach to teaching Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics, to students participating in after-school and in-school programs. STEAM activities are hands-on and minds-on and offer endless opportunities for our students to explore the necessary skills for careers in fields relating to Coding, Engineering Design Process, Drones, Cybersecurity, and Mobile Development.

WOZ ED looks to equip classrooms with tools and resources that inspire and foster creativity, using 3-D printers and drones, block and text-based coding tools, robots and cybersecurity simulations. More importantly, the robust lessons are designed not just for students, but for teachers to easily and readily guide their students.

The program inspires students to acquire coding and software development skills. The STEAM kits enhance the classroom experience for students, requiring them to think computationally as they are introduced to coding lessons at the elementary and middle school levels. The launch of the program will be unveiled on Thursday, May 2nd at 6PM at E.F. Lindop School – 2400 South 18th Avenue, Broadview, IL 60155, where more than 100 students from grades K-8 will be participating.

“Our mission at WOZ ED is to provide students with the right tools and opportunities to succeed in a competitive world,” says Karen Young, CEO, WOZ ED. “Work today demands that students arm themselves with the latest technology and knowledge and we’re proud to be able to provide that for as many students as possible as early in life as possible.”

Computing jobs are the number one source of new wages in the U.S.; therefore, WOZ ED has designed programs that encourage collaboration, problem solving and critical thinking, alongside technical skills.

“As a native of the Chicago area, I’m grateful for the opportunity to share with young students the endless possibilities that a STEAM education makes available to them,” stated Hunter.  “This type of education has the power to change and shape young lives and any time we can open doors to kids who might have not had the chance to experience technology up close, it’s a good day.”

WOZ ED is a convergence of the worlds of education and work whose programs are aligned with the emerging global economy, encouraging students to embark in non-traditional and non-linear routes to employment.

“As educators, we always strive to provide our students with the best tools to succeed, not just in school, but in life,” said Dr. Sonya Spaulding, Principal at E.F. Lindop School. “We are grateful to Steven and WOZ ED for supplying our students with STEAM kits so they can gain first-hand knowledge of the world that awaits them. These types of hands-on programs and approaches are extremely beneficial for students to explore the immensity of opportunities the STEAM field provides.”

Students will be able to demonstrate and model what they learned during the WOZ ED program next fall.
