Since it began awarding certifications to plastic surgeons in 1937, the American Board of Plastic Surgery has issued fewer than 10,000 certificates in the United States. Dr. Culbertson is one of just 209 plastic surgeons who received certification from the nonprofit at the end of 2018 after successfully passing oral exams in November.
No doctors are required to seek board certification. The process is entirely voluntary, so those who undertake the process are particularly committed to pursuing excellence in their field. The American Board of Plastic Surgery is part of the American Board of Medical Specialties, along with 23 other medical specialty boards. The overarching goal of each board is to protect public health.
