Philadelphia, PA, May 13, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Philadelphians will put their feet to the pavement on Sunday, June 9, for the inaugural Step Beyond Celiac Philly 5K run/walk at the Philadelphia Zoo to raise funds to advance celiac disease research. The event benefits Beyond Celiac whose mission is to advance research to find treatment options and, eventually, a cure for celiac disease.
Step Beyond Celiac Philly 5K is a fun run/walk event for the entire family. The course will be a unique experience, taking runners and walkers around the Philadelphia Zoo. On-site registration opens at 7:00 am and the race starts at 8:00 am.
“In addition to supporting the Beyond Celiac research efforts, the Step Beyond Celiac 5K also will help us develop a global patient registry of people diagnosed with celiac disease who want to participate in research studies, including clinical trials,” said Alice Bast, Beyond Celiac CEO. “Celiac disease is a serious genetic autoimmune disease that damages the small intestine when gluten is ingested. We have to find a cure for celiac disease, which affects one in 133 Americans,” she added.
Pre-registration fees for a walker/runner are $40 for adults and $35 for kids. Day-of registration fees are $50 for adults and $45 for kids. Team registrations are also available and provide discounted registration fees for getting the gang together. Register as a team captain and invite friends to register as Team Members – $35 for adults and $30 for kids until race day.
All participants receive a commemorative t-shirt (if registered by May 17) and free same-day admission to the Philadelphia Zoo. Gluten-free boxed lunches are available for purchase with registration until June 4. The Phillie Phanatic and other special guests will be on hand to cheer on the participants.
