Nicholas Davis Joins Oceana’s International Board of Directors

Chilean businessman and conservationist named to leadership of ocean conservation group

Washington, DC, May 20, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Oceana, the largest international advocacy organization focused solely on ocean conservation, announced that Nicholas Davis, a prominent Chilean businessman and conservationist, has joined its Board of Directors.

Davis currently serves as the President for Chilean insurance and financial services group, EuroAmerica. Davis also leads the Fundación Punta de Lobos, a foundation he founded to protect threatened natural areas in Chile through a private conservation model called Voluntary Easement. This approach gets easements from private landholders to create public access to Chile’s coastline – helping to foster tourism, artisanal fishing, surfing, and conservation. The Foundation is named after Punta de Lobos, one of Chile’s most famous surfing destinations and home to orcas, southern right whales, sea turtles, Humboldt, and Magellanic penguins, and a wide variety of seabirds.

Davis will – as an Oceana board member – advise on efforts to protect the oceans in his home country as well as in the eight other countries and regions where Oceana works. “Oceana has played a leadership role in winning enormous victories that have protected Chile’s seas,” said Davis. “I am excited to be a part of the future victories to come, both in Chile and around the world.”

Davis joins a Board led by Oceana Board Chair Valarie Van Cleave and Vice-Chair Ted Danson. Comprised of 25 leaders in business, academia, philanthropy, and the arts, Oceana’s international Board of Directors has played a vital role in the group’s many policy victories and its expansion from the United States to Central and South America, Europe and Asia – including the recent opening of Oceana’s office in Mexico. “Nico is a true ocean hero,” remarked Oceana CEO Andy Sharpless. “his expertise and background in conversation will help us win more victories for the seas.”

Additional board members include Diana Thomson, James Sandler, Keith Addis, Dr. César Gaviria, David Rockefeller, Jr., Dr. Daniel Pauly, Dr. Kristian Parker, Dr. Rashid Sumaila, Gaz Alazraki, Heather Stevens, Herbert M. Bedolfe, III, Jean Weiss, Jena King, Loic Gouzer, María Eugenia Girón, Monique Bär, Sam Waterston, Sara Lowell, Simon Sidamon-Eristoff, Stephen P. McAllister, Susan Rockefeller, and Sydney Davis.
