Global mobility solution provider Bombardier Transportation has been awarded the prestigious Brandenburg Design Award for the exterior and interior design of their BOMBARDIER ZEFIRO Express intercity train. The train’s distinctive appearance is set to reshape mobility and redefine the intercity passenger experience in the Swedish region of Västra Götaland, where Swedish rail operator Västtrafik will run these trains.
The Brandenburg Design Award recognizes ZEFIRO Express intercity train’s striking exterior design, which is characterised by a classic Scandinavian design language that merges practical functionality, with modern elegance and a subdued colour scheme. The interior architecture is particularly spacious and inviting and features a smart lighting concept that creates a serene ambience for its passengers.
Helene Frahm, Design Lead at Västtrafik, said, “We are happy to learn that the ZEFIRO Express has won the Brandenburg Design Award for Industrial Design. The development process was closely coordinated between us and the Bombardier design team and the train’s mock-up is both attractive and unique. We look forward to seeing them in operation and meeting our customer’s needs.”
Nicole Michel, Team Leader, Industrial Design, Bombardier Transportation added, “We enjoyed the very effective and creative, hands-on cooperation with Västtrafik. The train will not only look great, it will also offer a reliable and relaxing journey to passengers across the Västra Götaland region.”
The design process’ unique challenge was creating an attractive train that could still function efficiently in the region’s demanding winter conditions. Able to operate in temperatures as low as -40 degrees Celsius, the train’s headlights are positioned as high as possible in accordance with the industry’s Technical Specifications for Interoperability standards, while a specially-designed and particularly large, front-mounted snow plough will ensure a swift and safe operation in the region’s deep snow .
Founded in 2011, by Germany’s Ministry of Economics and Energy of Brandenburg, the Brandenburg Design Award, honours cultural and creative industries in the design industry.
