Nokia introduces unique IP-RAN Common Radio Resource Management for multi-standard 3G mobile networks

Nokia has unveiled its Common Radio Resource Management, (CRRM) which offers a breakthrough in IP Radio Access Network technology.

Nokia's revolutionary CRRM places the radio resource control for several radio network access standards into a single server. Additionally, it will increase radio network capacity by up to 50% and simplify the operation of future multi-standard IP-based mobile networks. The Nokia CRRM will ensure interoperability and bring greatly improved efficiency in multi-standard networks, which will
become the industry norm.

"Six-fold traffic capacities, which we expect to see in future networks can only be implemented in a cost-efficient way when operators evolve to a distributed radio access architecture. In the long run, cost efficient radio access for IP traffic is indispensable in making Mobile Internet an early reality, " says Vesa Tykkyläinen, Vice President and General Manager, IP Radio Networks, Nokia Networks. "The new Nokia Common Radio Resource Management will enable operators to move easily towards pure IP 3G networks."

Nokia will first integrate the CRRM functionality into its solution for TDMA/EDGE networks, which will be available during 2001. The CRRM functionality will be added during the following year.

Nokia's IP-RAN together with All-IP-Core will form an end-to-end IP mobile network concept that will facilitate ubiquitous 3G services over all major existing and future radio interfaces, WCDMA, GSM/EDGE, TDMA/EDGE, 1XEV-DV and WLAN. Nokia's recognized strength in Mobility Management, IP excellence - both in secure VPN and GPRS - as well as a commitment to fully open interfaces will enable Nokia to provide operators with the first and most future proof 3GPP compliant 3G networks in 2001.

Nokia is bringing its contribution to the relevant industry forums and standardization bodies in order to lead the industry to a common IP-RAN architecture. The IP-RAN concepts are currently discussed within MWIF and IETF. The 3GPP, 3GPP2 and 3G.IP are expected to focus on IP-RAN standards development in 2001. Nokia maintains its policy for supporting open standards in the IP-RAN as well as in the whole 3G network.

Nokia is paving the way to the mobile information society with its innovative products and solutions. Nokia is the leading mobile phone supplier and a leading supplier of mobile, broadband and IP networks, related services as well as multimedia terminals. In 1999, net sales totaled EUR 19.8 billion (USD 19.9 billion). Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is listed on the New York (NOK), Helsinki, Stockholm, London, Frankfurt and Paris stock exchanges and employs more than 60 000 people.
