Nokia unveils 3G SGSN - an industry first enhancing GPRS networks for 3G

Nokia has today unveiled its SGSN for 3G networks, combining the power of IP routing with the flexibility of mobile networks. The Nokia 3G SGSN has been designed specifically to be optimized for the new levels and types of traffic in 3G - and marks an industry first for Nokia.

Nokia's success in GPRS is proof that operators value knowledge of mobility combined with value-creating IP expertise. Both are essential in enabling rapid service development, increasing revenue and cost reductions in 3G mobile networks. With the Nokia 3G SGSN, operators not only have a dedicated platform for handling 3G packet data traffic, but also an evolution path to all-IP because the 3G SGSN works seamlessly with other mobile packet core equipment already installed in the network.

With Gigabit thoroughput and high subscriber capacity, the Nokia 3G SGSN can provide real-time traffic capability with carrier class Quality of Service, for new requirements and services such as IP telephony and real-time multimedia,. It can also generate charging data for the new kinds of billing required by these services. Such high performance is achieved by designing the 3G SGSN for the exact requirements of 3G packet routing and mobility management - making the 3G SGSN built to purpose precisely for 3G. The 3G SGSN will be available for pilot deliveries in the first half of 2001.

"The 3G era of Mobile Internet will bring an explosion in the number of new applications and as well as voice, images, music and video will be part of the new richer user experience. The introduction of the WDCMA radio network will mean an approximate 10 fold increase of packet data traffic. The Nokia 3G SGSN combines Nokia's unique expertise in IP and Mobility and offers the optimal solution for handling packet based traffic in future 3G mobile networks. With a variety of open interfaces and compatibility with existing 2G network equipment, the Nokia 3G SGSN is ideal for the flexible upgrade of networks to 3G," says René Svendsen-Tune, Senior Vice President, Marketing and Sales, 3G Systems, Nokia Networks.

As the link between the 3G Radio Access Network and the packet core network, the Nokia 3G SGSN relays user traffic between 3G terminals and the 3G backbone network, as a gateway. In addition it provides mobility and connection management, plus subscriber authentication and supervision of 3G network services and resources.

Nokia is at the forefront of development and implementation of GPRS equipment for mobile operators. Since August 1999, Nokia has delivered and implemented more than 50 GPRS core networks to leading operators in Europe, USA, Asia and China, and now has the largest installed base of any supplier. Four operators have also commercially launched GPRS services with Nokia GPRS equipment.

Nokia can deliver the industry's strongest and most efficient core GPRS system, together with Nokia's Connecting@care support services. In addition, Nokia can provide System Integration expertise to integrate the GPRS core network into the existing service delivery and billing environment.

Nokia is paving the way to the mobile information society with its innovative products and solutions. Nokia is the leading mobile phone supplier and a leading supplier of mobile, broadband and IP networks, related services as well as multimedia terminals. In 1999, net sales totaled EUR 19.8 billion (USD 19.9 billion). Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is listed on the New York (NOK), Helsinki, Stockholm, London, Frankfurt and Paris stock exchanges and employs more than 60 000 people.
