Nokia chosen by Telenor as supplier for Broadband DSL equipment

Nokia, a world leader in the supply of digital subscriber line (DSL) products and technology, has signed a framework agreement with Telenor Telecom in Norway as a supplier of high-speed Broadband DSL access equipment.

Under this agreement, which covers the next two years, Nokia will supply the Nokia D50e Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM), a range of Nokia ADSL network terminals, Nokia NetAct management solution for broadband networks and Nokia LoopMaster products.

DSL is a technology that enables higher bandwidth over copper lines for additional services such as streaming media, secure remote work and fast Internet access at connection speeds that typically range from 1.5 Mbps to 6/8Mbps. In combination with other technologies such as Wireless LAN, home users can benefit from wireless high-speed Internet access.

"Telenor Telecom will continue to introduce solutions designed to enable companies to strengthen their level of competitiveness and to make everyday life easier for private individuals," said Ole Henrik Waldenstrøm, Telenor Telecom's Director. "With the scaleable Nokia DSL solution we will rapidly be able to meet the demands of our customers."

"Norway already has the highest density of ISDN in the world and Nokia's DSL solution enables the introduction of broadband IP services," said Morten Graesli, Managing Director Nokia Norway. "With faster connections comes richer services such as voice, data, messaging, Web access, video, television and e-commerce. Nokia's proven Broadband IP Access system is already in service with major customers on all continents and we are delighted to sign this agreement with Telenor."

Nokia’s global broadband DSL position is stronger than ever with its latest DSL customer announcements. Nokia’s broadband solution, featuring the D50 DSLAM and LoopMaster, is deployed in over 4,500 central offices worldwide whose telecom networks reach 90 million homes and business. Nokia’s DSLAM and loop manager are deploying DSL across five continents.

Note to Editors:
ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) is a higher-speed alternative to Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) and analogue modems, utilizing the copper wiring that already connects each home. Besides higher bandwidth, ADSL has another advantage for consumers: a single twisted pair can carry both voice calls (using existing analogue lines) and high-speed digital data, while also providing always-on connectivity.

The Nokia D50e for ETSI markets is a Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) which provides broadband services over existing copper access lines. Operators can now provide customers with efficient, simultaneous broadband network access and traditional telephone services. In essence, the Nokia D50e makes connections faster and more reliable for both business and residential users. With its two-stage architecture, Nokia D50e is a cost-optimized solution based on ATM multiplexer technology and is suitable both for large central office and small outdoor cabinet installation.
