Aussie Biotech Sector Prepares to do Business Globally

SAN DIEGO, June 27, 2001 (PRIMEZONE) -- "Doing Business Globally," a track at the BIO2001 conference held in San Diego, June 24-27, 2001, sponsored by the State Government of Victoria, Australia is aimed at biotechnology commercialization in the international market.

U.S. biotech partnering and investment guru, Stan Yakatan, will chair "Models for Commercialization Public Funded Biotechnology Research" as part of the "Doing Business Globally" stream at the BIO2001 conference on Wednesday, June 27, 2001.

"Biotechnology is all about taking a global perspective; although there are cultural differences between countries, essentially the business of setting up biotechnology enterprises is the same the world over. Our panel members have had vast experience in using public funds to create new biotechnology companies, from the start-up phase through to the financial, legal and operational stages and finally into commercial reality," Yakatan said.

John Brumby, the Treasurer of Victoria, when asked about the upcoming session, said: "This session is designed to give people an indication of the strengths required to become a world leader in the biotechnology industry and how the best and brightest have achieved success. Victoria, Australia is one of the hidden gems in the biotechnology world. But we won't stay hidden for long with projects such as our recently announced synchrotron for biotechnology research coupled with the State's unique partnering and investment opportunities. BIO2001 has been a great success in showcasing Victoria and Australia's biotechnology capabilities to the world. Now we need to capitalize on the momentum we have built at BIO2001 and follow up on some of the great partnering and investment opportunities the Premier and I have established while here."

The panel for "Models for Commercialization Public Funded Biotechnology Research" session includes several Australians, among them Chief Executive Officer, Biocomm International, Dr Andy Gearing; and Chief Operating Officer, Monash Institute of Reproduction & Development, Robert Klupacs.

International panel members include: Executive Director, Calgary Innovation Centre, Lawrence Bremner; Phenomenome Discoveries Inc., John Hyshka; Managing Partner, Jerusalem Global Ventures, Dalia Megiddo; and attorney, Stephen Nagler from Phillips & Nizer.
