ONI Systems Powers the SC2001 Global Infrastructure Backbone, Connects Constellation Sites Worldwide

DENVER, Nov. 12, 2001 (PRIMEZONE) -- ONI Systems Corp. (Nasdaq:ONIS), a leading provider of optical telecommunications systems for metropolitan and regional markets, today announced that the ONLINE(tm) transport platform will serve as the intelligent metro DWDM backbone for SCinet, the global infrastructure at SC2001, the conference for high-performance networking and computing, held on November 12-16, 2001 in Denver, Colorado. Participating with Government agencies, ONI will provide the critical linkage to extend the distance of distributed supercomputer applications and will drive the testing of a prototype TeraGrid distributed facility, which utilizes high-bandwidth connections (such as 10 Gigabit Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet and OC-192 services) between high-performance computing applications-offering researchers an opportunity to collaborate and push the envelope of networking.

ONI will place an ONLINE7000 sub-network in the core of the SCinet infrastructure at the Colorado Convention Center and an ONLINE7000 at the STARLIGHT exchange point in Chicago, Illinois, both of which will interface with other high-end networking equipment, such as routers and switches typically found in today's high-performance networks. In Chicago, ONI's ONLINE7000 transport platform will utilize the ONWAVE(tm) Gigabit Rate Data Mux (GRDM) to multiplex Gigabit Ethernet streams into an OC-48 wavelength for delivery to the SC2001 exhibit floor in Denver. In Denver, the ONLINE7000 transport platform will aggregate several OC-48 wavelengths coming into the SCinet network from national exchange points in Sunnyvale, California and Seattle, Washington. The demonstration will also highlight ONI's OC-192 DWDM transport between SCinet core routers.

"We are pleased that ONI could join us in this important demonstration," said Linda Winkler, a member of the SCinet architecture team and senior network engineer at Argonne National Laboratory. "We examined ONI's transport platform closely and knew it would be a perfect fit for the SCinet high-end network. The transport platform is extremely flexible, scalable and can easily handle the complex operations and scalability of today's supercomputer network demands."

Andy Page, vice president of Business Development at ONI, added, "SC2001 presents ONI with a unique opportunity to work with leading Government agencies and other organizations focused on R&D for networks of the future. Testing of these new technologies and procedures will enhance supercomputing networks and applications, furthering the development of the next generation Optical Internet."

The SCinet demonstration and ONI Systems are located at the SCinet Booth #655 at the SC2001 Conference.

About SC2001

The SC2001 Conference is unique in its combination of a state-of-the-art technical program and premier industry and research exhibition. At the conference, SC2001 attendees can see new products and learn about emerging applications, as well as make contacts with the world's leading computer experts in industry, academia and Government. The SC2001 Global event will use Access Grid technology and an advanced network infrastructure to link the core of SC2001 activities at the Denver Convention Center Complex (USA) with SC Global Constellation Sites distributed across North America and throughout the world including Antarctica, Australia, Canada, China, Germany, Italy, Japan and the U.K.
