One of the greatest challenges for Volvo and other automakers has been the rapid introduction of in-vehicle software and computers, said David Hellstrom, group leader at Volvo Technological Development Corporation (VTD) in Gothenburg, Sweden.
"When the discussions about telematics were initiated within Volvo, I saw large advantages in using a visual modeling tool," Hellstrom said. Following a tool evaluation, they chose Telelogic Tau SDL Suite.
"After building a prototype, very early on we were able to run simulations of its functionality - without having the hardware ready," said Project Manager Laurent Colpier. The team also recognized advantages of using the SDL code as documentation, which saved the team a lot of time compared to documenting a system developed in textual programming languages, such as C.

By taking advantage of Telelogic's training courses, Volvo was able to ensure a fast and efficient implementation. Telelogic also provided Volvo with specialized consulting services.
"As always, the deadlines are tough, and to lower the risks of introducing a new tool, we relied on Telelogic's services. This enabled a smooth integration with our operating system and helped us see the advantages of using SDL in a real-time project," according to System Designer Claes Pihl.
In order to deliver new concepts to the market more quickly, the development team also looked to other tools from Telelogic to make their organization more efficient.
"We recently decided to implement Telelogic DOORS(r) to improve our requirements management process," said Hellstrom, who believes DOORS will help them improve the quality of their products as well as their development processes.
Volvo is also considering use of full family of the Telelogic Tau UML products as well. "We hope to use both UML and SDL in the future. Graphical tools and languages facilitate both development work and maintenance, while simultaneously shortening the development time," Hellstrom concluded.
