WJ Communications Engineering Director to Present at MTT Short Course

Presentation on Microwave Applications in Photonic Systems

SAN JOSE, Calif., April 9, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- WJ Communications, Inc (Nasdaq:WJCI), a leading designer and supplier of high-performance RF semiconductors for next-generation telecommunications equipment manufacturers, announced today that Mr. Michael O'Neal, Director of Product Development, will give a presentation at the Microwave Theory and Techniques Society's annual broadband technologies workshop in Stanford, CA on April 20, 2002.

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. (IEEE(r)) and the Santa Clara Valley Chapter of the Microwave Theory and Techniques Society (MTTS(r)) will be holding this annual short course on broadband technologies at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) Auditorium. The workshop is an educational forum on various broadband technology topics with presentations by leading experts from industry and academia.

Mr. O'Neal's presentation, "Microwave Applications in Photonic Systems," will take place from 11:15 a.m. to 12:10 p.m. His presentation is an introduction to microwave electronics applications within Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) systems. He will provide an overview of common system architectures and talk in more detail about the functions of microwave electronics within those architectures. Modulation schemes and their relation to the critical electrical-to-optical (EO) interfaces will be of particular note.

"My presentation will cover critical challenges facing microwave electronics in modern fiber optic systems and some alternative solutions," O'Neal said. "It will provide insight into the often overlooked yet increasingly more important role of microwave electronics within optical systems."

As Director of Product Development, Michael O'Neal is responsible for research and development of RF semiconductors, wireless and fiber optics products. He has held various engineering and management positions during his 21-year career with WJ Communications (previously Watkins-Johnson Company, Inc.) and has developed amplifiers, filters, digital control loops, frequency synthesizers and other commercial and military products. He holds a B.S.E.E. from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
