Newport Corporation Introduces MRSI-175UF Capillary Underfill Dispenser For Flip Chip Market

NORTH BILLERICA, Mass., July 16, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- MRSI Group, a subsidiary of Newport Corporation (Nasdaq:NEWP), today announced that it will introduce its new MRSI-175UF Underfill Dispenser for Flip Chip applications at SEMICON West Back End 2002 in San Jose, California. The product will be on display in Booth No. 11035 in McEnery Hall at the San Jose Convention Center July 17 - 19, 2002.

Newport's MRSI-175UF includes a variety of application specific configurations, including single and dual conveyors, single and dual dispense heads, rotary pumps and linear positive displacement pumps. The MRSI-175UF can be adapted to meet customer requirements in the development stage or during production.

The MRSI-175UF utilizes Newport's linear positive displacement pump, which provides the precise process control, high dispense accuracy and consistent repeatability needed for today's high volume production. This pump utilizes closed loop encoder feedback, enabling it to hold very tight process control tolerances over extended periods of time. This substantially reduces the frequency of required calibrations as compared with competitive pumps, thereby making the MRSI-175UF more cost-effective and easier to use.

 Pump features include:
  -- True positive displacement
-- Closed loop high resolution encoder feedback
-- Easy, no tool assembly for cleaning

In addition to the pump technology, the MRSI-175UF offers a parallel processing conveyor that enables the system to conduct different process steps, such as underfill material flow, preheating, loading and unloading on multiple parts simultaneously.

"With the adoption of new materials and technologies, advanced packaging dispensing tasks within the electronic and semiconductor industry have become increasingly complex," said Neil Srivastava, vice president and general manager of Newport's MRSI Group. "Controlling the underfill process is critical for high yield flip chip production. The Newport MRSI-175UF offers our customers a major differentiating advantage with higher throughput, substantially superior performance and significantly improved productivity at a low cost of ownership."

The MRSI Group, a wholly owned subsidiary of Newport Corporation, is a leading supplier of dispense and assembly systems for the semiconductor, microelectronics and electronic packaging industries.

Customers and investors who are also interested in Newport's front-end automation products are invited to view them at SEMICON West 2002 from July 22-24, 2002 at San Francisco's Moscone Convention Center, Booth 436 in South Hall.
