From William the Conqueror to Elizabeth II -- New Book Thoroughly Recounts England's Long Legacy of Monarchs

CHAPEL HILL, N.C., Sept. 4, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Over the course of history, a European island grew into a mighty nation that came to rule or influence much of the globe at one time. America's history is linked to that island, now known as the United Kingdom and origin of England. It is a land ruled by royalty with a rich history. Now, that history is brought to life in the new book, The Cavalcade of England's Kings and Queens: What Americans Really Want to Know About Our English Heritage (now available through 1stBooks), by H. Eugene Lehman.

In this informative, entertaining text, Lehman, with wit and understanding, recounts England's general history through the lives of its reigning monarchs. He offers, in an easy-to-read style, clear descriptions of each monarch's nature, motivations and decisive actions. Accompanying these explanations, Lehman gives the underlying causes that set the stage for the events that follow. Although the proficiency to rule tends to vary from poor to excellent, The Cavalcade of England's Kings and Queens gives credit where it is due to monarchs whose personal actions influenced change.

The Cavalcade of England's Kings and Queens deals, in chronological sequence, with the "Roman Conquest of Britannia" at the beginning of the Christian era, the Anglo-Saxon domination during the Dark Ages to the Norman conquests, and all the sovereigns throughout England's history. While fleeting attention is given to British history prior to William the Conqueror and his Norman army in 1066, Lehman discusses one monarch per chapter, beginning with William and ending with the present queen, Elizabeth II.

Can't remember which Henry beheaded his wife or which George was infuriated by a Bostonian tea party? The Cavalcade of English Kings and Queens is an excellent reference edition both for the curious reader and the serious historian, alike.

A native of Kentucky, Lehman received a bachelor's degree from Maryville College, a master's from University of North Carolina (UNC) and a doctorate from Stanford University. He spent a year studying abroad at the Universities of Bern, Switzerland and Naples, Italy. A professor for 41 years at UNC, he has written several dozen scholarly papers and seven college texts. He's also received awards for excellence in undergraduate teaching.
