HERNDON, Va., July 9, 2004 (PRIMEZONE) -- Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC), in partnership with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and the Louisville Metro Government, received a 2004 Intergovernmental Solutions Award from the American Council for Technology.
The award is in recognition of the Traffic Response and Incident Management Assisting the River Cities' (TRIMARC), Auto Incident Recording System, which was implemented to more efficiently gather data at one high-incident intersection in downtown Louisville. The system is an extension of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's TRIMARC program, an advanced traffic management and traveler information system spanning the Louisville-southern Indiana urbanized area, which monitors over 50 miles of regional interstate roadways.
The Auto Incident Recording System is an integration of video cameras, microphones, computers and a video recording system manufactured by Mitsubishi Electric of Japan. Louisville Metro is the first and only site in the United States to implement this technology. There are more than 300 installations in Japan.
"The collaboration between the Louisville Metro's traffic division, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, and Northrop Grumman answered the call for increased safety for the citizens and commuters of this growing community," said John Crossfield, TRIMARC program manager for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. "This award reaffirms our commitment to technological progress and improved safety for our citizens."
Deployed in July 2001 at the intersection of Brook and Jefferson Streets in Louisville, the system quickly produced new information on the behavior of motorists leading to accidents and near accidents. Prior to the system integration, accidents at the intersection occurred at a rate of 1.25 times per month, and near accidents at a rate of 3.5 times per month. Transportation engineers used this information to make several enhancements to the intersection, which resulted in a 50 percent reduction in accidents.
The Auto Incident Recording System also provides accident reconstructionists with unbiased video and can accurately calculate vehicle speeds, angles of impact, driver reaction times and kinetic energy estimates. This provides traffic safety engineers with a new set of variables previously unavailable or difficult to obtain.
