SODERTALJE, Sweden, Sept. 5, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- Scania now presents a wide range of engines that meet the Euro 4 emissions standard coming into force throughout the EU from October next year. In addition, engine versions complying with the 2009 requirements (Euro 5) will be launched in 2006. Another item of engine-related news is the market's most powerful V8, with a power output of 620 hp. In addition there is a completely new range of gearboxes and extended Fleet Management services.
All the new Scania products will be shown at the international truck exhibition in Amsterdam on 14-22 October (press day 13 October).
From autumn 2005, Scania's customers will have a choice of Euro 3, Euro 4 and Euro 5 compatibility in an engine range comprising no less than 21 variants. Engine torque -- in other words driveability -- has been further enhanced in all the new engines. In combination with the new gearboxes, the Scania Retarder auxiliary braking system and the Scania Opticruise computer-aided gearchanging system, customers can specify a powertrain optimised for any type of transport.
For Euro 4, Scania uses simple and robust EGR technology (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) on all its inline engines, that is to say its five- and six-cylinder units. Scania EGR features patented innovations that are unique and that ensure environmental performance as well as operating economy.
For its powerful V8 engines Scania uses SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) technology to ensure cooling capacity and the very highest performance in all situations.
Already next year, Scania will offer a Euro 5 version of its 12-litre and 16-litre engines
These units have been developed primarily to meet the demand from customers operating across Germany who will benefit from the reduced motorway tolls being offered as an incentive until 2009. In 2006 Scania will also launch a 9-litre Euro 5 engine intended mainly for city buses.
New range of gearboxes
After 15 years of successful service, Scania's entire gearbox range will be replaced in 2006. The new gearboxes are part of Scania's optimised powertrains that allow customers to tailor their vehicles to suit a wide variety of transport needs. A large number of improvements and new options further boost productivity and reliability. Despite higher torque capacity to suit the more powerful new engines, a weight saving of up to 69 kg has been achieved depending on configuration.
Extended Fleet Management services
From October 2005, Scania is extending its range of highly competitive fleet management services and products. Scania Fleet Management is structured on a new GPRS-based communication concept that offers secure and reliable communication at a fixed price throughout Europe. The services, which enable haulage firms to reduce costs and administration, can be tailored to suit individual customer needs and can be integrated with the transport office's operational and logistics systems.
The range of Scania Fleet Management services covers everything from navigation, support for order handling, invoicing and payroll administration to services for monitoring fleet and driver performance. The services are complemented with three new in-cab computers featuring large touch-screens that permit full interaction between the office and driver. One major benefit for operators handling mixed fleets is that the computers also can be fitted in other truck makes. All this makes Scania Fleet Management the most comprehensive, flexible and user-friendly system on the market.
