New Chartwell Report on Renewable Energy Reveals Average Prices, Participation Rates in Green Power Programs

ATLANTA, Jan. 10, 2006 (PRIMEZONE) -- Green power offerings among utilities are growing for a number of reasons, from state mandates to greater customer demand. In fact, the percentage of North American utilities offering green power to residential customers has grown from 22% in 2002 to 62% in 2005, according to proprietary research revealed in Utilities and Green Power, one of Chartwell's latest reports.

Government-owned utilities (municipals, PUDs) are most likely to offer green power: 79% of them do, compared to 62% of IOUs operating in deregulated markets, 55% of cooperatives and 44% of IOUs that are still fully regulated. The report also reveals customer participation rates and average sales prices for both commercial/industrial and residential customer segments. Data is derived from an in-depth survey of 87 utilities regarding green power as either a premium product and/or part of the standard generation mix, green power sources, wind farm ownership and other issues.

The 115-page Utilities and Green Power report:

    and against utility green power programs;
