Telvent to Implement Light Rail Priority System in Algeria

The Project Will Enable a Reduction in Light Rail Travel Times and the Secure Coordination of System Interaction With City Traffic Interaction

ROCKVILLE, Md., Aug. 10, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Telvent (Nasdaq:TLVT), a leading real-time IT solutions and information provider for a sustainable world, announced today the award of a contract with Isolux-Corsan, involving Enterprise Metro d'Alger as the end customer, to implement the Telvent SmartMobility™ Light Rail solution for the new light rail system in the Algerian city of Oran. The new light rail system, comprising 32 stations along its 18-kilometer route, is scheduled to begin operating by 2011.

Thanks to this project, Oran authorities will be able to effectively coordinate interaction between city traffic and the new light rail network, having the capability to give priority at anytime to the light rail over private transportation whenever this is considered to be appropriate. This will help to minimize delays and unjustified standstills, while enhancing the city's road safety levels.

The system to be installed by Telvent is based on selective light rail detection, which will enable the system to determine whenever the light rail is approaching an intersection. Once detected, the system will give priority to the light rail over private transportation, thereby ensuring driver safety at the same time.

Specifically, Telvent will develop and start up the priority system, in addition to the traffic regulators and the LED-type technology-based road signaling systems. This technology contributes to obtaining energy savings of up to 70 percent with respect to the costs generated by current technology.

Ignacio Gonzalez, Telvent's chief executive officer, explained that the solution developed by the company "will help the city of Oran to effectively coordinate the interaction between city traffic and the light rail system, resulting in a significant improvement to urban mobility and guaranteed passenger safety and security".

This project, along with the contract awarded recently to implement the light rail priority system in Rabat, enables Telvent to enhance and consolidate the company's position in the Northern Africa market as a technological leader in smart transportation systems. The company has successfully executed a wide range of projects in the region, noteworthy among which are the traffic control center in the city of Rabat and a recent contract win involving the supply of an advanced navigation and maneuver simulator system for the Algerian Merchant Marine School.
