Media Advisory: CLC to Present At ILO Hearing Regarding Use of Asbestos Ken Georgetti Available for Media Comment

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 9, 2011) - The Canadian Labour Congress will give testimony on Saturday, June 11 to the International Labour Organization in Geneva regarding Canada's continuing production and export of chrysotile asbestos.

Ken Georgetti, CLC president will be available from Vancouver to provide comment to the media.

The CLC supports a ban on Canada's production and export of asbestos along with a just transition program for displaced workers in the industry. The CLC says the Canadian government has ignored expert advice indicating that chrysotile asbestos is not safe and is causally linked with various forms of cancer. The government has failed to consult with labour and other stakeholders on steps that Canada could take to comply with international conventions calling for a ban on asbestos.

The Canadian Labour Congress, the national voice of the labour movement, represents 3.2 million Canadian workers. The CLC brings together Canada's national and international unions along with the provincial and territorial federations of labour and 130 district labour councils. Website: www.canadianlabour.ca
