NEWPORT NEWS, Va., July 19, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Huntington Ingalls Industries (NYSE:HII) announced today the appointment of Rebecca E. "Beci" Brenton to the position of corporate director of public affairs.

Brenton, who works in HII's Washington, D.C., office, is responsible for the planning and development of public affairs campaigns in support of the company's new and existing programs and works in concert with HII's Government and Customer Relations team to support external initiatives. She serves as chief spokesperson for HII and directs all public affairs activities for the corporation, to include the company's Newport News Shipbuilding and Ingalls Shipbuilding divisions. Brenton reports to Jerri Fuller Dickseski, corporate vice president of communications.

Prior to joining HII, Brenton served six years as special assistant for public affairs for the Office of the Secretary of the Navy. In that capacity, she acted as principal spokesperson, public affairs lead and trusted counsel for Secretary Donald C. Winter, Acting Secretary B.J. Penn and Secretary Ray Mabus. Brenton also served as senior DoD public affairs officer for the inter-agency task force that developed the process to determine the legal status of detainees at Guantanamo Bay. Brenton has also worked as executive assistant to the chief of information for the Navy Office of Information and as public affairs officer to the commander of U.S. Submarine Forces. Brenton earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Notre Dame and a master's degree in national security strategy from National Defense University.
