ComRent Unveils Water-Cooled Load Bank Solution for Data Centers

EXLS Server Simulator Load Bank Rental Solution Offers Cost-Effective, Unprecedented Control for More Accurate Validation Testing of Energy-Efficient Data Center Equipment

OWINGS, MD--(Marketwire - May 2, 2012) - ComRent today announced its new, custom-engineered load bank solution that delivers a better way to test water-cooled equipment in data centers. The new EXLS is the industry's first in-aisle, water-cooled server simulator load bank, designed to conduct end-to-end electrical and thermal testing of both the chiller and chilled water loop, reducing the need for multiple time-consuming and costly tests. The EXLS water-cooled server simulator system is a modular, lightweight load bank system that offers commissioning professionals unprecedented control when conducting data center chiller plant and chilled water loop validation testing -- with more accurate results.

According to a March 2012 report from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), the single most challenging issue for the design, build and maintenance of today's modern data center is the efficient cooling of the facility's mission-critical equipment. Low‐power dissipation liquid-cooled equipment, or water-cooled devices, at either rack level or rack proximity, are popular alternatives to help lower energy consumption expenses associated with cooling the data center. These water-cooled devices must be tested and verified as part of the data center commissioning process, just like any other electromechanical system -- and until now, a controllable, convenient and cost-effective method was not available to accurately conduct this testing.

"Data center commissioning professionals tasked with testing water-cooled, high-density mainframes and other data center equipment have had few choices when it comes to verification testing. They were forced to either purchase expensive, heavy work-around solutions that were not designed to give accurate testing results in a modern, water-cooled environment, or perform separate tests on the chiller plant and the chilled water loop," explained Clayton Taylor, CEO and President of ComRent. "The ComRent EXLS server simulation load bank is the only system that enables end-to-end testing of both the chiller plant and chilled water loop flow rates in addition to validating the Delta T (temperature rise) in a true operating environment."

The modular EXLS is 70 percent lighter than other water-cooled load banks on the market and is easier to position throughout the facility's raised floor, at chilled water loop taps, for the ultimate in manageability and control. Only the ComRent EXLS water-cooled load bank offers infinitely variable BTU settings and variable flow control via electronic servos that can be networked and managed as a complete system from a single laptop computer or Android device. The EXLS incorporates a proprietary, tankless heat exchanger design, requiring a mere 18 to 36 gallons of water, depending on load configuration. This design innovation translates into a faster, more accurate end-to-end validation test of the chiller plant and chilled water loop that also reduces the weight stress on the data center floor and lowers the risk of site damage that can be caused by water spills at the connection tap or as a result of boiler leaks.

ComRent's water-cooled load bank system is available for rent in two configurations: 250kw and 500kw -- and can be linked mechanically and electronically to simulate an infinitely variable water-cooled load. Visit here to request a quote for an EXLS Server Simulator rental.
