Pixable Acq-Hires Winner of Global Android Developer Challenge After Creating Android Version of Pixable in Three Weeks

New York, June 7, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Pixable (http://pixable.com), the app that finds the top photos and videos shared by your friends on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, or Instagram, today released its new Android app developed by the winner of the Global Android Developer Challenge, Juan Carlos Viota.  A Pixable fan, Viota requested access to the company's private Application Programming Interface (API) and built an Android app within three weeks. Pixable liked it so much that they acq-hired him and immediately launched it as the official Pixable Android app.

Viota is widely recognized as one of the top Android developers in the world. Previously he had won the Global Android Developer Challenge, with a prize of $250,000, having been a finalist the previous year too. After building the Pixable Android app in three weeks, he joined the Pixable team of 20 engineers in New York.

"We've been focused on iOS since the beginning, but when you're given the opportunity to have your Android application developed by one of the best developers in the world, you go for it," said Inaki Berenguer, CEO & Co-founder of Pixable. "We know that in order to build a great product and a great company, we require a great team and we continue to welcome the most talented engineers and designers."

The native Android Pixable app provides photo feeds for a better photo consumption experience for users on those devices.  Prior to the debut of the Android app, 20 percent of Pixable's traffic came from Android users who were redirected to the mobile Web version, http://m.pixable.com. The Android app, which is a beta version, is faster than the mobile web, has a more refined user interface and takes advantage of the native properties of the Android platform.

A photo inbox app, Pixable collects all the photos that are shared on users' social networks, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Flickr, yFrog and Twitpic, as well as videos from YouTube and Vimeo. The app then sorts the photos based on relevance into feeds like "Top of the Day," "Top of the Week," "New Profile Pics" and "Most Recent Photos," among other categories.  By collecting photos into feeds, Pixable keeps helps users keep track of important pictures that may be missed on other social networks.

"The number of photos being shared on social networks is exploding, even in the past few months. You have to many friends and connections, sharing too many photos, into a lot of places," continued Berenguer. "With Pixable, we're providing a way to make sure people do not miss any of the pictures their friends are taking and sharing."

Prior to launching on Android, Pixable has become the most popular photo consumption application on the iPhone and mobile Web with 3 million users. In viewing photo feeds, Pixable's users swipe through more than 2,000 total photos per minute. On average, users open the app 11 times per month.

The Pixable Android app can be downloaded from Google Play (http://play.google.com). iPhone and iPad users can find the app in the iTunes store and the mobile Web version can be accessed via http://m.pixable.com. After integrating with Facebook in Facebook, Pixable is connected on Facebook Timeline.
