Press Registration Open for EcoSummit 2012 in Columbus, Ohio

Limited Number of Press Passes for International Summit on Ecological Sustainability

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Sept. 6, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Press registration is open for EcoSummit 2012, an international summit for academics and scientists to discuss practical solutions to major environmental challenges with government and business leaders who can implement changes. EcoSummit 2012 begins September 30 and ends on October 5 in Columbus, Ohio. Press registration will close on September 24, 2012.

"It's estimated that 40 percent of the world's economy and 80 percent of the needs of the poor are derived from biological resources: plants, animals, microorganisms and different ecosystems, like deserts, wetlands, forests and coral reefs. The richer the variety of those resources, the greater the opportunities for medical discoveries, economic development and adaptive responses to challenges like climate change," said William J. Mitsch, conference chair of EcoSummit 2012 and Stockholm Water Prize winner. "That's why EcoSummit will focus on 'prescriptive ecology,' that is what we can do to fix the major environmental challenges of our time."

EcoSummit will present cutting-edge work on restoring the world's ecosystem services and feature hundreds of symposia, workshops and discussion groups on the themes of sustainability and restoration of the earth's ecosystem services, including political environmental discourse, business and economic sustainability practices, ecological restoration, food security and climate change.

Registered members of the media will be granted free access to EcoSummit 2012's plenary sessions, including speeches from such notable names as, Pulitzer Prize winners, E.O. Wilson and Jared Diamond; Stockholm Water Prize winners, Sven Jørgensen and William J. Mitsch; President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson of Iceland; renowned author, Lester R. Brown; among others.

This is only the fourth time EcoSummit has convened and the first time it will be held in the United States. The fact that EcoSummit 2012 will take place in Columbus is in large part to the leadership of The Ohio State University and the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission. To date, more than 1,500 people from 75 countries have registered, including ecologists, environmental scientists, engineers, policymakers and business leaders that provide ecosystem services around the world.

EcoSummit 2012 will also serve as an unofficial celebration of the 50th anniversary of Rachel Carson's seminal work, Silent Spring. Carson's book is credited with starting the modern environmental movement. Wilson, who will kick off EcoSummit 2012 with the keynote address, knew Carson and served as one of the book's editors. His keynote is expected to focus on the ecological diversity of Appalachia, which he describes as the second most ecologically diverse area of the world next to the Amazon rainforest.
