Novati Technologies Selects CipherCloud for Gmail Encryption

Cloud Email Encryption Enables ITAR Compliance and Move to the Cloud

SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 7, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- CipherCloud, the leader in cloud information protection, today announced that Novati Technologies has selected CipherCloud's Google Gmail encryption service. With the help of Cloud Sherpas, one of the world's leading cloud services brokerages, Novati is moving  to cloud-hosted email service while protecting their data-at-rest, lowering their email costs and freeing up IT resources. Another advantage is that the user's Gmail experience is unchanged, because CipherCloud's encryption gateway preserves search and sort features on the encrypted data. It has also enabled them to use mobile devices to securely access their email.

As a nano-technology engineering development and commercialization firm whose clients include the U.S. defense community, an important consideration in moving to the cloud was that Novati must comply with ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations) regulations for handling sensitive data enforced by the U.S. State Department.

"We have specific responsibilities because of ITAR to prevent intentional or accidental technology transfer and while I wanted to use cloud-based email, I needed to protect that data," said Patrick Meyer, director of IT at Novati. "That requirement led us to CipherCloud, who presented us with the opportunity to encrypt the data-at-rest."

A key benefit of the CipherCloud Gmail encryption platform cited by Meyer is that Novati retains the encryption keys, giving them complete control over data. Even if the cloud host provider system admin got access to the email files, he or she could not understand or decrypt the content of the messages.

"If I could not encrypt my data using CipherCloud I would not choose to use a cloud service for my emails," said Meyer. "But being able to use Gmail and move our email to the cloud is strategic because it lowers our costs and frees up IT resources. Instead of working on the commodity side of IT services, we can focus on strategic projects that advance and differentiate our business and help drive top line revenue."

Meyer considered other options, but for ITAR compliance "the combination of CipherCloud and Gmail gave us just what we were looking for."

The team is now considering moving elements of their ERP system into the cloud as well using CipherCloud Connect AnyApp, which can be used to quickly set up encryption for any Web- or cloud-hosted application.

"Security remains the number one inhibitor preventing organizations from adopting cloud applications, and CipherCloud solves this huge problem in a very elegant way," said Pravin Kothari founder and CEO of CipherCloud. "Our vision has been to create solutions that enable organizations to safely and securely adopt the cloud while maintaining a high level of security and retaining control of their information."

Since its founding in 2010, CipherCloud has rapidly grown its customer base, now protecting 1.2 million cloud application users and 100 million customer records for more than 40 enterprise clients across eight countries. Customers include top firms in banking, insurance, healthcare and technology, as well as government agencies.

In December 2012, Andreessen Horowitz invested $30 million in CipherCloud.
