Following Record High, Spectrem Affluent Investor Confidence Index (SAICI(R)) Plummets to Nine-Month Low During Government Shutdown

CHICAGO, IL--(Marketwired - Oct 29, 2013) - The Spectrem Affluent Investor Confidence Index (SAICI®) fell 12 points in October to -4, a nine-month low, Spectrem Group announced today. The Spectrem Millionaire Investor Confidence Index (SMICI®) plummeted 15 points to 8. This is the largest month-to-month drop since April-May 2009.

The monthly indices measure the investment confidence and outlook of households with more than $500,000 in investables and more than $1 million in investables, respectively.

The SAICI had reached an almost 6 1/2-year high in September, while the SMICI surged to a nearly 9 1/2-year high. But the government shutdown and the fractious debt ceiling debate in October eroded these gains. "The drops in the Spectrem indices are a vivid reminder that what happens in Washington D.C. does not stay in D.C.," said George H. Walper, Jr., President of Spectrem Group. "The significant declines are a reflection of the emotional state of mind of the country's wealthiest investors regarding what they perceive to be the direction of the economy and their personal financial situations."

Spectrem's monthly survey of how Affluent investors intend to invest in the coming month found an increasing number plan to wait on the sidelines.
