Mentoring USA and NASDAQ OMX Sponsor Financial Education Month at Eagle Academy for Young Men of Newark

NEW YORK, NY April 14 2014 – Mentoring USA, with support from the NASDAQ OMX Educational Foundation, in partnership with City National Bank, is launching Financial Education Month at Eagle Academy for Young Men of Newark.  The month-long program features speakers from NASDAQ OMX; City National Bank; social entrepreneur, public speaker and author, Chike Uzoka; and best-selling author and teacher of financial empowerment, Tiffany “Budgetneisa” Alliche.

All Eagle Academy for Young Men sixth and seventh grade scholars will participate in two weeks of financial education classes and activities, focusing on four aspects: personal, business, community, and career. The month culminates April 26, 2014 at a Saturday workshop for youth and their parents, focusing on 529 Plans and where a conversation about finances will be moderated by Ryan Mack, regularly seen on CNBC, CNN and BET.  The recipient of Tom Joyner’s “Hardest Working Financial Advisor Award,” Mr. Mack focuses on empowering communities and community members with the life skills of financial education.

In addition to supporting this event, employees from both NASDAQ OMX and City National Bank are stepping forward to serve as mentors to young people in New York City and Newark NJ.  NASDAQ OMX employees will be mentoring NYC High School students as part of a Career Readiness program.

This month-long program is part of a 3-year grant from the NASDAQ OMX Educational Foundation, enabling Mentoring USA to continue to expand its financial education and entrepreneurship curriculum to ensure that young people have the tools they need to be successful.  Increased financial education is imperative for our youth.  The opportunity to educate mentees about economics, financial responsibility, entrepreneurship, and investment options will help combat the devastating cycle of poverty that many of our youth face.
