Canon Solutions America Honored at Xploration 14

Worldwide leader in production printing receives numerous accolades

MELVILLE, N.Y., April 29, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Canon Solutions America, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Canon U.S.A., Inc., today announced it received several honors at the Xplor International 2014 Technology and Application of the Year Awards, presented Wednesday, March 26, 2014, during the Xploration 14 Customer Communications Conference held at the Wyndham Orlando Resort in Orlando, Florida.

Canon won awards in three (3) categories:

Application of the Year

In the Application of the Year category, which recognizes outstanding achievement in the imaginative application of current technology and/or unique implementation of existing document and communication systems, Canon Solutions America received 1st Honorable Mention for the implementation of Océ PRISMAproduction® and the Océ InkControl system.

Océ InkControl enables customers to achieve remarkably reliable job-specific ink usage estimates prior to a production run and then reports back the actual ink usage during production. For large projects, it is not necessary to run the entire job through the virtual printer. Only the first few pages need to be processed to calculate the average ink consumption and then extrapolate it to the complete job.

"Ink usage is one of the main components in the cost structure of print products and varies dramatically from job to job and by media used," said Francis A. McMahon, Vice President, Marketing, Production Print Solutions division of Canon Solutions America. "With its recognition of the Océ InkControl system, Xplor has made it clear that the industry values the ability to provide precise ink estimates."

Technology of the Year

Additionally, the Océ ColorStream® 3000 series digital inkjet platform received the Honorable Mention for the Technology of the Year Award, which honors an individual, company, or organization that has conceived and developed an original concept leading to a significant advancement in the industry.

The Océ ColorStream 3000 series enables an extremely efficient utilization of resources, reducing the impact on the environment and offering a higher sustainability than other inkjet presses. The Océ ColorStream 3000 series is the first, and currently only, webfed inkjet printing system with a production pause function and first-page printing feature that eliminates paper waste during ramp up and ramp down. The ability of the Océ ColorStream 3000 series to produce sellable quality in the acceleration and deceleration phases of the web saves many feet of paper during every start and end of production.

"Increasingly, printers are focused on reducing their carbon footprint, but they don't want to sacrifice quality," said McMahon. "The Océ ColorStream 3000 answers the need for a more eco-friendly digital printing system, reducing waste while maintaining the high level of quality and performance people have come to expect from Canon Solutions America."

Recognizing a Lifetime in Print Production

The event also focused on recognizing those whose contributions have made the print industry what it is today. Top honors were awarded to Mal Baboyian, Executive Vice President, Canon Solutions America, who received the prestigious Brian Platte Lifetime Achievement Award.

Not only is Mal Baboyian a top leader in the high-volume digital print industry, he is also a well-respected industry professional, an engaging speaker at industry events, and a friend to many in the diverse print industry. Mr. Baboyian is responsible for driving growth and profitability for both the Production Print Solutions and the Large Format Solutions divisions of the company, navigating the constantly changing transactional, direct mail, graphic arts, book printing, display signage, and reprographic markets. With a specialized focus on these markets, Baboyian guides all the activities relevant to the business and plays an instrumental role in achieving and sustaining industry leadership.

"It's an incredible honor to be recognized for this career that brings me so much personal and professional joy and fulfillment," said Baboyian. "Not only is it an acknowledgement of the contributions I have made, it also validates Canon's strategic, forward-thinking approach to moving the production print industry forward by placing our customers at the forefront of everything we do."

A graduate of the University of Maryland, Baboyian began his career with Océ North America in 1976 when the company was only in the large format business. He initially served as Area Manager, but he excelled in that position and went on to lead the Public Sector Sales and Marketing group when Océ introduced narrow format printers. In 1990, Baboyian became Group Vice President of the Large Format Division of Océ in the U.S.A., later serving as President of that division. Under his leadership, Océ introduced the industry-changing Océ 9800 in 1995.

Baboyian also led the way in Océ's development of workflow solutions, revolutionizing the way reprographers interact with their customers. Virtually overnight, the industry transitioned from analog to digital, and Océ went from being a niche player to a market leader.

In 2003, Baboyian became President of the Production Printing Systems division of Océ, where he was instrumental in guiding the company to introduce production inkjet technology. Today, Canon is the worldwide leader in placements of production inkjet printers. In recent years, Baboyian served on the integration team that worked to successfully integrate Océ North America and Canon Business Solutions following the acquisition of Océ by Canon, Inc. in 2011.

Previously, Baboyian served on the Board of Directors of the International Reprographics Association and was given the Bukofsky Award for Lifetime Contribution to the reprographics industry. He has also served on the Executive Board of EDSF and the Executive Board of NPES, representing Océ and subsequently Canon. Recently, he was inducted into the Soderstrom Society in recognition of his contributions to the industry.

After nearly 40 years in the print industry, Baboyian prides himself on ensuring his organization has the right products and resources, develops the right strategies, communicates these strategies with confidence, and channels all of the company's energies to reach a specific goal.

"Mal Baboyian has set the bar high for everyone who follows him in the production print industry," said Skip Henk, EDP, President and CEO, Xplor International. "With the benefit of his experience and knowledge, it's no coincidence that Canon Solutions America has become the first company in the history of Xplor to earn the distinction of receiving three annual association awards in a given year."
