Pinnacle Bankshares Corporation Issues Third Quarter Earnings

ALTAVISTA, Va., Oct. 21, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Net income for Pinnacle Bankshares Corporation (OTCQB:PPBN), the one-bank holding company (the "Company") for First National Bank (the "Bank"), was $601,000 or $0.40 per basic and $0.39 per diluted share for the quarter ended September 30, 2014, and $1,682,000 or $1.11 per basic share and $1.10 per diluted share for the nine months ended September 30, 2014. Net income was $544,000 or $0.36 per basic and $0.35 diluted share and $2,470,000 or $1.63 per basic and $1.62 per diluted share, respectively, for the same periods of 2013. Consolidated results for the quarter and nine month periods are unaudited.

Net income for the referenced 2013 nine month time period includes the recognition of $1,077,000 in insurance proceeds received as a result of the fire that destroyed the Vista Branch Office and the subsequent rebuild of that facility, which re-opened on May 6, 2013. The proceeds were recognized as noninterest income in the second quarter of 2013, while the new building and equipment were booked as fixed assets and are being depreciated over the useful life of the assets.

Exclusive of the insurance proceeds, "core" operating net income was $1,393,000 for the nine months ended September 30, 2013, which is the basis for year-to-date comparisons. Current year net income for the third quarter and year-to-date has increased approximately 10% and 21%, respectively.

Profitability as measured by the Company's return on average assets ("ROA") was 0.63% for the nine months ended September 30, 2014, compared to 0.52% core ROA generated during the first nine months of 2013. Correspondingly, return on average equity ("ROE") for the nine months ended September 30, 2014 was 6.80% compared to 6.40% core ROE generated for the same time period of the prior year.

"We are pleased to have produced quarterly earnings in excess of $600,000 for the second time this year and to continue our improvement as compared to 2013," stated Aubrey H. Hall, III, President and Chief Executive Officer for both the Company and the Bank. He further commented, "Strong asset quality and a higher net interest margin have driven the improvement, which has allowed the Bank to focus on infrastructure and strategic planning for the future."

The company produced net interest income of $9,031,000 for the first nine months of 2014, which represents a 4% increase as compared to the $8,673,000 generated for the same period of 2013. Year over year improvement for the time period was achieved through lower cost of funds as interest expense was down an estimated 42% or $1,086,000 to $1,509,000. This cost reduction was achieved through further lowering of interest rates paid on deposits and the continued growth of checking account balances in relation to savings and time deposits. The decrease in interest expense was offset to a degree by lower interest income, which decreased approximately 6% or $728,000 to $10,540,000 due to a decline in the yield on interest earning assets, which were primarily loans. The Company's net interest margin increased 19 basis points to 3.62% for the first nine months of 2014 as compared to the same time period of 2013.

Continued improvement in asset quality over the last year has lowered the Company's provision for loan losses, which was ($8,000) for the first nine months of 2014 as compared to $132,000 for the first nine months of 2013. This decline has been driven by a $1,450,000 decline in nonperforming assets from September 30, 2013 to September 30, 2014.

The Bank's allowance for loan losses was $3,043,000 as of September 30, 2014, which represented 1.12% of total loans outstanding. In comparison, the allowance was $3,486,000, or 1.26% of total loans outstanding, as of December 31, 2013. The year-to-date decrease in the allowance to total loans ratio is reflective of the Company's strengthened asset quality position. Allowance coverage of problem loans continues to expand as the balance was 161% of nonperforming loans as of September 30, 2014 versus 132% as of December 31, 2013.

Noninterest income decreased $1,388,000 or approximately 37% to $2,336,000 for the first nine months of 2014 as compared to $3,724,000 for the same period of 2013. As referenced earlier, $1,077,000 in insurance proceeds related to the Vista Branch fire and rebuild were recognized as income in the second quarter of 2013. Net of the insurance proceeds, noninterest income still decreased $311,000 or approximately 12% year over year for the time period due to lower fees generated from sales of mortgage loans and commissions derived from sales of investment products.

Noninterest expense decreased $234,000 or approximately 3% to $8,922,000 for the first nine months of 2014 compared to $9,156,000 for the same period of 2013. This decrease is primarily attributed to lower compensation and employee benefits expense due to lower commissions, lower retirement plan expenses and fewer losses from the sale of foreclosed real estate. These decreases were partially offset by one-time costs associated with outsourcing the Bank's core system and a contract buyout associated with changing electronic bill pay vendors. The Company expects to benefit from greater efficiency and more focus on client service and delivery channels as a result of those initiatives.

Total assets as of September 30, 2014 were $361,841,000, up less than 1% or $2,874,000 from $358,967,000 as of December 31, 2013. The principal components of the Company's assets as of the end of the period were $270,493,000 in total loans, $41,716,000 in cash and cash equivalents and $29,858,000 in securities. During the first nine months of 2014, total loans decreased 3% or $7,265,000 from $277,758,000 as of December 31, 2013. The decline in total loans was primarily driven by the payout of two large commercial relationships during the third quarter. However, the Bank is experiencing a modest increase in loan demand and is encouraged by a marked increase in loan pipelines. Cash increased 18% or $6,259,000 compared to the prior year end, while securities increased 2% or 733,000.

Total liabilities as of September 30, 2014 were $328,170,000, up less than 1% or $1,511,000 from $326,659,000 as of December 31, 2013 and were primarily comprised of $323,861,000 in deposits. Higher levels of demand and savings deposits drove the increase as demand deposits increased by approximately 6%, or $2,758,000 and savings deposits increased by 2%, or $2,551,000. These increases were partially offset by an approximate 3%, or $3,578,000 decrease in time deposits.

Total stockholders' equity as of September 30, 2014 was $33,671,000 including $28,247,000 in retained earnings. In comparison, total stockholders' equity was $32,308,000 including $26,920,000 in retained earnings, as of December 31, 2013. The Company and Bank have continued to improve their capital positions while also paying a cash dividend to shareholders in each of the last eight quarters.

In other news, the Bank reorganized its Operations Department during the third quarter in an effort to improve efficiency and productivity as well as to further enhance customer service. As part of the reorganization, Tony Bowling, a long-term employee and the Bank's prior Network Administrator, was named Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer responsible for technology, core system management, network administration, facilities and branch support.  Mr. Hall stated, "Tony Bowling is an experienced and talented leader, who is well suited to oversee the critical responsibilities of this new role. I am excited about the changes within our company and what they will do to ensure we continue to deliver an extraordinary customer experience."
