6 Finalists Announced for Paolucci Award, Honoring Best Conservative Book

Intercollegiate Studies Institute Short-Lists 6 Titles for Prestigious Book Award--$5,000 prize


WILMINGTON, Del., July 7, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Intercollegiate Studies Institute today announced the finalists for the Henry and Anne Paolucci Book Award, which will recognize the best book published in 2014 that advances conservative principles.

This prestigious annual award (formerly known as the Henry Paolucci/Walter Bagehot Book Award) is named in memory of the distinguished scholars Henry and Anne Paolucci. Past winners include Daniel Hannan for Inventing Freedom, Brad S. Gregory for The Unintended Reformation, Pauline Maier for Ratification, and Andrew Roberts for A History of the English-Speaking Peoples since 1900.

Finalists for this year's Henry and Anne Paolucci Book Award:

  • Richard Brookhiser, Founders' Son: A Life of Abraham Lincoln (Basic Books)
  • William Easterly, The Tyranny of Experts: Economists, Dictators, and the Forgotten Rights of the Poor (Basic Books)
  • James Grant, The Forgotten Depression: 1921—The Crash That Cured Itself (Simon & Schuster)
  • Jason L. Riley, Please Stop Helping Us: How Liberals Make It Harder for Blacks to Succeed (Encounter Books)
  • Russ Roberts, How Adam Smith Can Change Your Life: An Unexpected Guide to Human Nature and Happiness (Portfolio)
  • Charles T. Rubin, Eclipse of Man: Human Extinction and the Meaning of Progress (Encounter Books)

ISI's selection committee chose the finalists from among more than sixty books nominated by publishers, universities, nonprofit organizations, and scholars. A distinguished panel of outside judges will select the winner. The panel includes: Amity Shlaes, author of Coolidge and The Forgotten Man; Angelo M. Codevilla, author of Advice to War Presidents (winner of the 2010 Paolucci Book Award); Serphin Maltese, former chairman of the Conservative Party of New York; Clara Sarrocco, executive director of the Council on National Literatures; Matthew A. Pauley, chair of political science and legal studies at Manhattanville College; and Ronald F. Docksai, president of the Walter Bagehot Council.

The winner will be announced in August. The winning author will receive a $5,000 cash award and will deliver ISI's annual Paolucci Book Award lecture in Wilmington, Delaware, this fall.
