Single Use Technology for BioPharmaceuticals

Double-digit growth seen for U.S. vaccines, drugs, devices

Wellesley, Mass., June 28, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) --

Trends in biopharmaceuticals are benefiting single use systems and products, accelerating both manufacture and consumption. A new report from BCC Research forecasts an expansion at CAGR above 12% through 2021 in the US and 9% in Europe. The report, Single Use Technology for Biopharmaceuticals examines the vaccines, drugs, laboratory supplies and other hospital products and suppliers in this category.

Companies such as ThermoFisher, Danaher, VWR, GEHealthcare, and others operate in this segment, estimated at reaching $4.3 billion by 2021. The range of items includes filters, bioreactors, containers, and the specialized contents as single serving treatments. They also include more ‘living organisms’ such as antibodies or proteins that require specialized handling or customization. Lower manufacturing costs, reduced maintenance and limiting water or sterilization required by devices continue to deliver economic benefits along with technological improvement.

Additional single use items are expected as contract manufacturing expands to supply the industry, according to BCC Research. The industry has shifted to prepackaged and single use items since plastics and shipping revolutionized the medical supply chain and technologies that gained popularity in the 1970s.

Research Highlights

  • S. remains the largest consumer market for single use biopharmaceutical devices, but emerging markets are predicted to see a 7.6% CAGR through 2021.
  • Hospitals, research facilities and laboratories are all part of this growth.
  • Through 2015, more than 90% of biopharmaceutical facilities already consume single use devices as part of daily operation.

"Lab safety and patient safety has improved; costs have declined thanks to disposal and recycling of single use items. The trend will only expand as precision medicine brings customized dosages and live proteins, monoclonal antibodies and vaccines. Prepared blended bioreactors and mixers, containers and tubes are replacing the age of glass beakers or stainless steel tools that had to be sterilized and reused,” says Robert Hunter, senior healthcare editor at BCC Research.
