Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters Help Renovate Headstrong Foundation's Nick’s House

SWARTHMORE, Pa., Dec. 12, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters (NRCC), local elected officials and area residents gathered yesterday for the grand opening of Headstrong Foundation’s “Nick’s House” located at 200 S. Chester Road in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania.

The grand opening gave attendees the opportunity to tour “Nick’s House,” while learning more about the Headstrong Foundation and its mission. Throughout 2017, NRCC Locals 173 and 164 helped to construct Nick’s House, a place of comfort for families who have a child battling cancer and undergoing out-of-town treatment. To date, the Foundation has helped nearly 14,750 patients and their families.

During the construction phase, 50 Union Carpenters volunteered their time to renovate a 120-year-old building, including: framing; sheet rocking; drywall; door installation; and ceiling grids. Local 173 Council Representative Thomas Breslin worked closely with the staff at Headstrong Foundation and Carpenters who volunteered their time for the project.

“Headstrong Foundation’s Nick’s House is an organization built to help families in need,” said Breslin. “I am proud that the Carpenters Union received the opportunity to help with the construction of the building, while playing a small role in impacting the lives of children battling cancer.”

Cheryl Colleluori, President of Headstrong Foundation, was delighted to work with a group of Carpenters who donated their time to an organization close to her heart. Colleluori is the mother of Nick, who lost his battle to childhood cancer at the age of 19.

“I’m speechless,” said Colleluori. “They took a 120-year-old building and transformed it into something great. They put a high level of detail into the building and I am thankful for their help.”
