Increasing Government Support and Initiatives

Ageing Nuclear Fleet

Despite increased capacity in developing economies, the average age of the world's reactor fleet has been rising due to a substantial slowdown in the rate of commissioning of nuclear reactors in developed economies in recent years. However, the majority of nuclear power reactors in developed economies today were built in the 1970s and 1980s. Due to the big construction wave in the 1970s and 1980s, as well as the slower rate of construction in subsequent years, the world's nuclear fleet is ageing.

Outside of Japan and Korea, approximately 90% of advanced economies' nuclear reactors are more than 30 years old. In developing economies, the average age is only 25 years. With the exception of Russia, the majority of reactors in those growing economies are less than 20 years old. In addition, older factories begin to close in advanced economies, partly due to phase-out programs, but also due to market circumstances and regulatory hurdles. Due to ageing, capacity is expected to fall as retirements catch up with fleet ageing: approximately a quarter of capacity is expected to be shut down by 2025. Consequently, this is likely to limit the growth of the market in the years to come.
