CROCKETT, Texas, Dec. 4, 2000 (PRIMEZONE) -- ArchivalCD, Inc. (pre-IPO OTCBB:AHCD) announces that it has contracted Family Technologies to provide programming for a special class of software to be freely distributed via the Internet. Although the expected release date is not yet set, the company hopes to have the software ready before the close of first quarter 2001.
The program, tentatively named IDexer(tm), will allow volunteers world-wide to index historically important documents in the process of creating an "every-name index." Digital images will be downloaded to users one page at a time for indexing. Upon completion, the index data will be uploaded to ArchivalCD(tm) servers and then a new page will automatically be downloaded. The resulting database will be made available for free access on the Internet and will encompass documents and records from anywhere in the world.
"Although parts of the IDexer database will overlap with other databases being made available, the IDexer data will always be free. Right now, many commercially available name databases require a fee to access all of the data," says Daniel J. Hay, CEO/President of ArchivalCD, Inc. "Our plan of one page at a time allows any volunteer to do just as much, or as little, as they wish to contribute in their time without holding up any indexing project. The project won't fall apart due to volunteer 'burn-out' or extended lapses in participation."
Hay indicates that, "Every imaged page is sent to two different volunteers and a comparison analysis and review is performed for each block of returned data. With our software tracking, every page we can automatically resend a page to a different volunteer if a delay becomes apparent in completion of a page so no project gets held up." ArchivalCD will also use the index of each project as an attachment to the CD digital microfilm(tm) containing the original images.
