ALSTOM Receives Orders Valued at More than 650 Million Euros for Power Generation Plants in Brazil

PARIS, Sept. 20, 2001 (PRIMEZONE) -- ALSTOM (NYSE:ALS) (Paris Stock Exchange:ALSO).

ALSTOM has won orders for a multiple unit combined-cycle plant, and for two gas turbines, all in Brazil and with a total value of over 650 million euros.

Alexis Fries, Managing Director of ALSTOM's Power Sector commented, "We are, of course, very pleased that these customers have chosen ALSTOM. These orders are the result of our long-standing commitment to the Brazilian market. They are also the results of the particular efforts to promote our mid-range turbines through our extensive international sales network. Obviously, we will keep on supporting the Brazilian customers who are still in need of a significant amount of power to meet the growing needs of the country."

Combined-Cycle Cogeneration Power Plant for TermoRio

The first order is a turnkey contract to supply 3 KA11N2-2 blocks for the combined-cycle power plant of TermoRio, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. When operational, the plant will produce an electrical power output of more than 1000 MW and 400t/hr of steam to be supplied to the Reduc refinery of Petrobras and to the grid and will be the largest combined-cycle and cogeneration power plant in South America.

The contract, worth around 600 million euros, was placed by TermoRio S.A., a special purpose company formed by NRG Energy, Petrobras and PRS established in Brazil. The plant will be constructed in phases, starting commercial operation in simple-cycle mode in 2002, less than a year from order. The whole plant is scheduled for completion at the beginning of 2004.

ALSTOM will supply the 6 gas turbines (type GT11N2), steam turbines, heat recovery steam generators (HRSG), electrical generators, main mechanical equipment of the power island and control systems. In addition, ALSTOM in Brazil will be responsible for the design, procurement and contracting for the civil works and balance of plant, including a high-voltage substation as well as installation of all the equipment at site.

The TermoRio combined-cycle power plant incorporates environmentally friendly state-of-the-art dry low NOx combustion, a world-leading technology that satisfies all environmental requirements. The plant will significantly contribute to meeting the power demand in the state of Rio de Janeiro as well as helping to overcome the present electricity shortfall in Brazil.

2 X GT11N2 Gas Turbines Ordered for Extension of Piratininga Power Plant in Sao Paulo

ALSTOM has been awarded a second contract, this time for supply of two GT11N2 gas turbines for the Piratininga Power Plant, which is located in the surroundings of the city of Sao Paulo. When operational, the new plant will produce an additional electrical power output of 230 MW.

The contract, worth around 60 million euros, was placed by Petrobras - Petroleo Brasileiro S.A., which is the largest oil and petrochemical company in Brazil. This contract is in addition to the order awarded to ALSTOM last year for the supply of four GT11N2 gas turbines for Piratininga and brings the total GT capacity of the plant up to 690 MW. Having converted the original steam power plant into a combined-cycle facility, Petrobras will be in the position to bridge the energy deficit in the State of Sao Paulo, producing even more electricity at even lower specific generation cost.

ALSTOM will supply the gas turbines, electrical generators, and main mechanical equipment of the GT Power Island as well as the control systems.

As for TermoRio, the Piratininga power plant incorporates environmentally friendly state-of-the-art dry low NOx combustion, a world-leading technology that satisfies all environmental requirements. ALSTOM's GT11N2 gas turbine fleet has more than 50 units installed or on order for simple or combined-cycle operation worldwide. The fleet has accumulated a total of more than 220,000 operating hours and close to 7,000 starts.
