STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Jan. 24, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- Skanska's British subsidiary Skanska UK has been awarded two contracts in Scotland with a combined value of GBP 35 M, about SEK 525 M. The customer is the Scottish Prison Service.
The largest, worth GBP 18 M, about SEK 270 M, is for a 226-cell self- contained house block at HMP Edinburgh Prison. Work starts on site this month and will be completed in June 2003.
The second is a GBP 17 M, about SEK 255 M, contract to build a self- contained 213-cell house block for young offenders at HMYOI Polmont Prison in Falkirk, which will be completed late 2002.
Although both blocks are within the existing prison complexes, they will have their own facilities, including canteens, interview rooms, administration offices and libraries allowing them to operate independently from the main prison.
A high level of pre-fabrication will be used in construction of the buildings. The cells, floor, wall and roof are all being built off-site and then fitted together at the prison. This will increase speed, efficiency and end quality.
Skanska has a strong record in UK prison buildings, including six built in the past six years under the UK PFI (Private Financing Initiative) program.
