Anaheim, Calif. (February 12, 2002) - Nokia (NYSE: NOK) today announced that since August 2001, more than 50 customers have purchased the Nokia RoofTopÔ Wireless Routing mesh network solution, a product designed to enable carriers and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to deliver profitable broadband Internet services to residential and small business customers without dependence on existing copper lines. The first broadband wireless mesh system to be successfully deployed in commercial networks, the Nokia RoofTop solution inherently delivers the non-line-of-sight (NLOS) coverage required for mass market deployments by automatically routing around neighborhood obstacles like trees and hills.
The system became commercially available in volume quantities in the third quarter of 2001 through Nokia and TESSCO Technologies (NASDAQ: TESS), a leading provider of integrated wireless product plus supply chain solutions. Customers now range in size from those starting initial deployments to others well on their way to deploying large-scale networks. Vista Broadband Networks (co-winner with Nokia of this year's Wireless Communication Association Non-Line-of-Sight Award) began deploying the Nokia RoofTop solution in late 2000 on a trial basis, and has offered the service commercially for a year.
Scott Mindemann, Founder, CEO & Chairman, Vista Broadband Networks, Inc. says, "We are continuing to deploy the Nokia RoofTop system and are planning to expand our network significantly based on the success we've had in bringing affordable broadband service to residences and small businesses in Northern California."
"Since launching our wireless mesh solution, we have seen a clear transition from trial networks to volume deployments," said Andy Kelm, head of the Nokia Wireless Routing Business, Americas region. "Across the country, people are demanding broadband Internet service and operators are rolling out routed mesh networks to meet this demand where wired broadband alternatives aren't ready."
About the Nokia RoofTop Solution
Nokia RoofTop Wireless Routing is a fixed wireless mesh network solution that includes Nokia RoofTop Wireless Routers, the Nokia RoofTop Router Management System (RMS), and a suite of customer services. The Nokia RoofTop Wireless Router functions as both a router and a modem, sending and receiving transmissions from an integrated antenna to provide broadband service in residential and small business markets.
Nokia RoofTop Wireless Routers solve the line-of-sight difficulties typically associated with residential fixed wireless broadband because they only require a wireless connection to neighboring routers, not a direct link to a central base station. Each subscriber acts as a full IP router, routing traffic for other subscribers around trees, hills, and buildings, and enabling deployment in diverse geographical locations. Operating in the license-free 2.4 GHz band eliminates the need for expensive spectrum licenses and enables providers to deploy wireless mesh networks quickly. The networks can be built in pace with demand, which reduces the upfront infrastructure investment.
Unique to the Nokia RoofTop solution is a highly specialized operating system, the Nokia AIR Operating System (OS). The Nokia AIR OS was developed specifically for intelligent and adaptive wireless mesh networking, and automatically detects new or removed neighboring routers and routes traffic through the most efficient path.
The Nokia RoofTop R240 Wireless Router is also a home gateway that supports home networking via standard telephone wires or Ethernet. It enables multiple devices to share the access link without having to install new in-home wiring, and provides simple security with Network Address Translation (NAT). The Nokia AIR Operating Systems' wireless intelligence controls a built-in RF amplifier to help make scaling the network simple and automatic.
The Nokia RoofTop Router Management System (RMS) enables service providers to quickly and easily configure, monitor and maintain their Nokia RoofTop networks. The RMS software allows service providers to check network operations at a glance with a dynamic Graphical User Interface, which provides a real-time display of the network topology and status. Routers can be configured and managed remotely, from the network operations center, eliminating the need for ongoing truck rolls to make changes to the devices.
