Frontec Awarded Contract for Customs System in Estonia

SOLNA, Sweden, Dec. 18, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- Frontec (Other OTC:FRNRF) (Stockholm:FTECb), as the lead partner in a consortium, has signed an agreement with the Estonian Customs Board on the development and implementation of a customs tariff system similar to the one used by Swedish customs authorities. The project, which is scheduled to be complete in less than a year, has a total value of 1.4 million euros.

The contract is based in part on components from the Swedish solution as well as the competence Frontec has in customs systems from similar solutions in Sweden and Denmark. The project is part of the EU harmonization that Estonia is undergoing and is financed by the EU through its so-called Phare program.

With the new system, companies in Estonia will be better able to continuously receive information, calculate, declare and pay customs duties on imports and exports to the Estonian Customs Board. Aside from Frontec, the consortium consists of the Estonian IT company Helmes.

"For Estonia, it is important that the forms for its EU membership are now in place. Preparations for EU accession have the highest priority in the years ahead," said Thomas Henriksson. "That is why this is a prestigious agreement for Frontec and a major success for the regional office in Lulea. We were awarded the contract in competition with several international consortia. Our previous relations with Nordic customs authorities and our competence in integration were decisive factors in the procurement process."

"For Swedish customs, this is a positive way to contribute to an expansion of public sector infrastructure that the Swedish government has agreed to with the Baltic states," said Bengt Wiklund, Head of Swedish Customs' IT department.

"Becoming a member of the EU means meeting high demands, not least of all with regard to our customs," said Aivar Rehe, Director General of the Estonian Customs Board. "We have to be able to handle the EU's customs tariff system right from the start. The timetable and demands we face are tough. This made it important for us to cooperate with a company with proven competence in the area and a history of reliability."
