Kansas State University Selects Virage for Digital Library

K-State Library Provides Online Access to Alfred M. Landon Lecture Series

SAN MATEO, Calif., Jan. 15, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Virage, Inc. (Nasdaq:VRGE), a leading provider of video and rich media communication software, today announced that Kansas State University (K-State) has implemented Virage software to establish the University's first digital library. As part of an initiative to provide campus-wide portal access to the entire K-State community, the K-State Library was tasked to implement a digital repository with key University media assets. The first phase involves transforming more than 30 years of audio and video recordings of the Alfred M. Landon Lecture Series on Public Issues to the web. Leveraging the Virage publishing software, the K-State digital library will also offer online access to the lecture series as well as to classroom and other reference content.

"Initially, our focus will be on the Landon Lecture Series -- then we'll broaden our efforts," said Brice Hobrock, dean of K-State Library. "Our goal is to get the University's most valuable video content digitised and accessible by K-State members on the web. The University Library and its archives was the logical place to start. We're extremely pleased that Virage is helping us to preserve such a prestigious lecture series, as well as to provide much broader and more convenient access to the content."

K-State, like most universities, has thousands of valuable media assets that need to be stored, managed, and accessed to support a range of learning and communication needs. The University plans to utilize the Virage publishing software to encode and index all of its video content and related media assets. The video and associated data will be delivered to a centrally located repository, which will be accessible by all K-State members in an on-demand fashion. Because the K-State Library is built on the Virage platform, including the SmartEncode(tm) products and the Virage Solution Server(tm), K-State is able to scale its digital library cost-effectively and on an as-needed basis.

About the Alfred M. Landon Lecture Series

The Alfred M. Landon Lecture Series on Public Issues is one of the most prestigious lecture series in American colleges and universities. Inaugurated in 1966 by former K-State President James A. McCain, the series is a tribute to the late Alfred M. Landon, who for many years was Kansas' most distinguished political leader. Governor Landon was sworn in as governor of Kansas on January 9, 1933, and was the Republican Party nominee for president of the United States in 1936. Governor Landon delivered the first lecture in the series entitled, "New Challenges in International Relations," on December 13, 1966.

Three to five of the country's leading personalities appear on the Landon Lecture platform each academic year. Speakers who come to Kansas State University to honour Governor Landon with their appearance are drawn from the public arena of world-renowned politicians, journalists, cabinet members, and other prominent figures involved in current public issues. Presidents Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, and Bush have delivered Landon Lectures.
