WHAT: The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary sponsors Safe
Boating Weekend to increase public awareness of safe
boating practices and waterway preservation along the
Delaware River. The blessing of the fleet on Sunday is a
featured element of this annual event.
Event highlights include:
-- Informational tables hosted by officers of the local
marine police and Coast Guard.
-- Saturday at 2pm-Boat Parade by Penn's Landing Marina.
-- Appearances from the Philadelphia Police Fireboats
and the Coast Guard Atlantic Strike Team, which
provides vessels to assist with oil spills.
-- Coast Guard Rescue Demonstrations Saturday at 1pm and
Sunday at 2:30pm.
-- Knot tying demonstration and other maritime related
displays and demonstrations.
-- Vessel safety checks and Hypothermia demonstrations.
-- Appearances from mascots: Officer Snook, Coasty, and
PFD Panda.
BACKGROUND: Penn's Landing is Philadelphia's Waterfront district,
running along Columbus Boulevard from Washington Avenue
to Spring Garden Street. The two main sites for the more
than 75 festivals, concerts, and events at Penn's
Landing are the Great Plaza, located along the Delaware
River at Columbus Boulevard and Chestnut Street, and
